An interior architect’s renovated period home located on a quiet stretch of Westgarth Street, Fitzroy, is seeking a new owner!
For the past 13 years, the property has been owned by Jane Kilpatrick, co-founder and principal of design studio Pipkorn Kilpatrick, and her husband Will Gordon. Over that time they’ve significantly updated the home without stripping it of charm or period features. ‘The house was very rundown with no view to the north-facing backyard. The laundry had the best light in the house,’ recalls Jane. ‘We loved the beautiful silver birch in the backyard and the original pressed metal ceilings and detailing. It had a great feel despite its shortcomings!’
The most significant change made was to reconfigure the floorplan, which saw the former add-on kitchen replaced, and the bathroom shifted to the opposite side of the house. The impact of these changes has created an undisrupted flow from the front door to the backyard, and has positioned the bathroom next to a lush alcove. ‘The shower feels like you’re on holidays!’ says Jane. ‘You can open up the door and feel like you’re showering outside.’
The centre of the home is now the light-drenched kitchen and dining area with large bi-fold doors opening to the rear. ‘The house has a natural relaxed feel, although the marble kitchen bench top and charcoal panelled wall add elegance,’ says Jane. The family have also transformed the home’s previously near barren backyard (have a Google!) into a thriving plant-filled courtyard.
It’s with sadness that Jane and her family will say goodbye to this home, as it holds a special place in both her personal and work life. As well as being their first family home, this property was also lived in by Pipkorn Kilpatrick’s co-founder and principal Anna Skermer over the years, as well as Jane’s sister Cate and her family, AND it was the Pipkorn Kilpatrick office for a period too! ‘We have many many happy memories,’ says Jane. ‘We wish we weren’t [saying goodbye], to be honest, because it’s so much a part of our family story! We have three rambunctious boys though, who needed a little more room.’
45 Westgarth Street, Fitzroy will be auctioned on Saturday November 30. See the full real estate listing here.
