Fitzroy/Ngár-Go locals can wander the streets to learn the neighbourhoods’ First Nations history this National Reconciliation Week (and beyond!), with a clever smartphone app called Yalinguth.
The augmented reality app transports users back in time with an immersive audio experience, sharing incredible Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, songs and history as you walk the shops and restaurants of Gertrude Street.
In the Woi Wurrung language Yalinguth means ‘yesterday’, and the app brings together stories from up to 30 notable Elders and community leaders – ranging from Uncle Jack Charles and Uncle Archie Roach to Greens Senator Lidia Thorpe.
Hear soundscapes, personal stories, historical protests, music, and spoken word about the rights movement, the stolen generations, discrimination and the community-controlled organisations that all started in Fitzroy. It’s also a reflection on the oral tradition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
It’s just one of the ways you can take initiative to mark National Reconciliation Week 2022, which kicks off today with the theme ‘Be Brave. Make Change’. The event is an annual reminder and opportunity to celebrate and connect with First Nations communities, in hopes of building towards reconciliation.
