A highly coveted achievement, the annual NGV Architecture Commission invites architects from all over Australia to propose ideas for temporary architecture to activate the NGV Grollo Equiset Garden, informing the experience of the community hub. Now in its fourth year, the commission makes a huge impact on the use of space during the gallery’s much-loved summer events program.

A selection process running  over two stages (the first an anonymous review of all entries), five projects were shortlisted out of the 73 entries from across the country. The winning proposal, Doubleground, took inspiration from the iconic NGV Building, designed by Sir Roy Grounds. References to the triangular patterns of the NGV’s facade, as well as the glass wall in the Great Hall are drawn from MUIR firm director Amy Muir’s childhood memories of visiting the NGV. This winning fusion with landscape architects OPENWORK encourages an integrated relationship between architecture landscape and civic space.

Previous winners of the commission include John Wardle Architects (2015), M@ STUDIO Architects (2016), and Retallack Thompson and Other Architects (2017).

Doubleground by MUIR and OPENWORK will be unveiled in the NGV Grollo Equiset Garden in November 2018, until April 2019.
