There are some people in this world who are so inherently GOOD that it’s hard not to mention this when speaking of them. Vipoo Srivilasa is one of those people. We first featured the artist’s delicate porcelain sculptures back in 2013, and after the story went live he sent us a box of the best Thai ingredients, with notes attached to every item explaining their best use. Vipoo knows the finest Thai food products because he spent most of his life there.

Emigrating to Australia from Thailand in 1997, Vipoo’s work often deals with social issues such as racism, religion, and Australian culture. His latest exhibition at Scott Livesey Galleries, Everyday Shrines, features 14 pieces that combine the traditions and aesthetics of fine Asian porcelain with playful, contemporary references, such as two-fingered peace signs and cartoon-like kangaroos.

The pieces reflect aspects of Vipoo’s own migration story and experiences. ‘These blue and white works have explored things that are shared with my native Thailand and my new home, Australia’, he explains, ‘I use blue and white as a reference to the porcelain of China exported to Europe hundreds of years ago, but also to my own migration from Thailand to Australia, from East to West’.
