How are you feeling? I’m feeling very unstable and insecure. I also feel very worried and anxious about everything. I also feel trapped and I feel that I am much too fat and that people are laughing at me. I feel very frustrated and depressed. I feel that I am unable to meet the demands that have been made of me. I am in a bit of a rut creatively as well.
These words of a mural scrawled on the side of the Third Drawer Down Fitzroy store belong to David Shrigley, a British artist known for his wry, humorous reflections on life and the human condition. This mural marks the launch of Third Drawer Down X David Shrigley General Store, the result of more than a decade-long collaboration between Melbourne’s kookiest homewares/gift store and the renowned artist.
The collection started with a tea towel but has now expanded to include reusable shoppers, T-shirts, homewares, and even their own wine, Glass of Piss Pinot Noir. You can even pop around the corner to Ladro and enjoy a pizza and a Glass of Piss (we’ve been assured it tastes great!).
‘Third Drawer Down emailed me and asked if I wanted to do a tea towel years ago. And I said, “Alright then, yeah. I’ll do a tea towel”’, David reflects, ‘Quite often collaborations that I have ended up with just started with somebody emailing me out of the blue and a beautiful friendship accrues from there’.
The Third Drawer Down X David Shrigley General Store will embark upon a world tour once finishing its Melbourne residency, going on the road to major cultural institutions in London, Tokyo, New York, and others.
