During this weird time, the Internet has delivered some wild and exciting things to keep everyone distracted as we collectively feel our way through the dark. But lifestyle and travel photographer Marnie Hawson has opted for a distinctly feel-good approach.

Inspired by the not-for-profit, often spontaneous wildlife sanctuaries that popped up across the East Coast during the devastating bushfires at the beginning of the year (which already feel a world away!), Marnie launched Prints for Wildlife: a long-term project to document the native animals in shelters and the carers who ensure their safety. From ZacDan the flying fox at the Joey + Bat Sanctuary Melbourne to Kate the bare-nosed wombat at Emerald Monbulk Wildlife Shelter, Marnie documents one animal at each shelter and lists the fine art prints for sale online.

As most of these animal shelters are completely self-funded or rely on small donations, 100% of profits from the sale of each print will go to the respective sanctuary to fund food, bottles, fuel and general maintenance!

‘Covid-19 has also had a negative impact on any fundraising that the shelters normally do, with events like sausage sizzles cancelled,’ says Marnie. ‘Some sanctuaries have sent volunteers home during the pandemic, so have an even bigger burden looking after their animals than usual.’
