Tim Ross could prattle on about anything for hours and we’d eagerly listen, plus surely laugh. And so, Brisbane’s iconic Wickham Terrace Carpark was just ripe for the design enthusiasts’ architectural musing.

Across the weekend of July 21st, this heritage-listed multi-storey building in Spring Hill will play host to the latest instalment of The Mid Century Project, which is showing for the first time in Brisbane.

Off the back of sell-out events at London Festival, the show will combine mid-century inspired film installations and art displays – featuring work by Paul Davies, Stephen Ormandy and Ben Quilty – with a performance by Tim alongside his best mate, musician Kit Warhurst.

Designed by James Birrell and built from 1959 to 1960, the Wickham Terrace Carpark was the first parking station to be constructed by Brisbane City Council and one of the first in the city area. ‘It may seem to be a bit bonkers to be performing in a 1950s carpark, but I just think that this landmark building tells such an important story about Brisbane architecture and we should be celebrating the work of its architect James Birrell in any way we can,’ tells Tim.

We can see why Tim recently won the National Trust Heritage Award for Advocacy, in recognition of shining a spotlight modernist buildings and their conservation – congrats!
