Curated by Erica Green, the 2018 Adelaide Biennial draws works from 30 contemporary Australian artists, on display at four venues along Adelaide’s cultural precinct: the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide Botanic Gardens, Jam Factory and Anne & Gordon Samstag Museum of Art.

The exhibition theme, ‘Divided Worlds’, dives right into the epic-ness of the universe by examining ‘an allegory of human society, one that meditates on the drama of the cosmos and evolution; on the past and the future; and on beauty and the environment’.

‘The curatorial premise, divided worlds, recognises that we live in troubled times, however, rather than foretelling conflict, my focus has been on assembling an exhibition that celebrates the enduring role of art and culture,’ says Erica, ‘Divided Worlds offers an opportunity to experience an alternative dimension – one where ‘difference’ is the natural order of things, and a strength to be celebrated.’

Held every second year since 1990, The Adelaide Biennial is the country’s longest-standing survey of Australian art. Featuring notable contemporary Australian artists, this year including Patricia Piccinini, pip + pop, Emily Floyd, Ghostpatrol, the ambitious exhibition contrasts thematic lightness and darkness in the curated artworks.

There’s really too much going on at The Adelaide Biennial to do justice in one short news listing… which is why you should look out for our top picks roundup later this month!
