Traditional and contemporary indigenous works across disciplines from ceramics to jewellery, weaving, photography, carving, textiles, painting and publishing will be sold across SouthEast, a two-day event taking place at Carriageworks this weekend.
This event provides customers the valuable opportunity to meet the artists behind the works they purchase. Because Aboriginal art is often unethically reproduced or imitated (see Ricky Gervais’ show After Life as an example, which was recently criticised for displaying a painting by an English artist who had replicated the style of traditional Aboriginal art), this direct to consumer model ensures only authentic art and wares are available.
Market curators Hetti Perkins and Jonathan Jones say, ‘Visitors can engage directly with local artists, acquire original artworks, and learn about a region rich in traditional and contemporary artistic expression.’ Heidi is an Arrernte and Kalkadoon woman who has been a senior cultural advisor on numerous national and international arts projects, and Jonathan is an artist, curator and member of the Wiradjuri and Kamilaroi nations.
This year’s SouthEast market will be almost double the size of 2018 event. The mix of emerging and established artists involved is a credit to the creativity and diversity of south-east Australia’s Aboriginal community. The market is free to enter.
