Patricia Piccinini’s hyperreal silicone sculptures inhabit an unsettling space, one between grotesque and loveable that can only be described as uncanny. The renowned Australian artist achieves a curious sense of empathy and emotional connection with these characters, and her ever-evolving art practice has been celebrated around the world for its ability to examine human intimacy through animalistic forms.
A new collaboration entitled Hugs sees Patricia join forces with Australian fashion designers Georgie and Alex Cleary of Alpha60, to create a series of limited-edition textiles. Three of Patricia’s artworks have been reimagined as woven blankets, with 100 of each edition available for purchase at Heide. The textiles will be on display at Heide Museum of Modern Art as an installation that includes recently restored original furniture by David McGlashan (the architect of the iconic Heide Modern building!) until mid-March. All proceeds from sales will go to the museum.
With the intention of exploring this particularly familial instant of human connection, ‘Hugs’ draws out themes of nature and nurture that Patricia is continuously exploring. Perfect for a time when we could all use a bit of a hug right now!
