The open form of the new MPavilion by Glenn Murcutt is designed to be ‘as much about the parklands as it is about the building.’ The tensile roof creates a lean and sleek profile, that at night is lit internally for a futuristic glow that ripples gently outwards into the surrounding trees. The space provides a perfect setting for four months of free talks, workshops, performances, community projects and the occasional dance floor.

Glenn Murcutt AO is Australia’s most recognised and awarded architect, and the only Australian to be recognised with the highest honour is architecture, the Pritzker Prize. The MPavilion team explain ‘we wanted to bring Glenn’s response to the MPavilion commission to Melbourne as the catalyst for another summer of free public events, to stimulate ongoing discussion and debate about design, architecture and our cities.’

The 2019 MPavilion by Glenn Murcutt follows his 50 year career approach of ‘touching the earth lightly.’ If you fancy spending a Saturday afternoon sheltered in this crisp white building, with a drawn back lantern-like roof, join Glenn Murcutt in conversation with Naomi Milgrom AO (founder of the Naomi Milgrom Foundation, which commissions each year’s MPavilion) as they discuss the development of the pavilion design, and Glenn’s lifetime work in vernacular and environmentally responsible architecture.

On November 14th, the 2019 MPavillion is officially launched with a suite of Opening Night activities, including a showcase from the RMIT Master of Fashion (Design) Graduate Showcase, a DJ set from Sara Savage, and Welcome to Country song composed and performed by Yorta Yorta woman Deborah Cheetham AO.

Take a tour of the MPavilion website to explore the full program of activities that will take place under Glenn Murcutt’s gently hovering white roof.
