National Reconciliation Week (NRW) starts on Friday this week, and Children’s Ground’s Wear It Yellow campaign is back!

Each year, National Reconciliation Week – spanning May 27 to June 3 – urges all Australians to reflect, learn about our shared histories, and strengthen relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and non-Indigenous peoples. The dates also commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey — the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.

In light of the annual event, First Nations organisation Children’s Ground is calling on schools, community groups and workplaces to raise money by wearing yellow and brighten the future of First Nations children and their communities.

All you have to do to take part is organise a Wear It Yellow fundraiser during NRW, choosing one day to dress in yellow — the official colour of Children’s Ground. They will also send you free educational resources so you can learn more about First Nations culture and history while you fundraise.

It’s a simple, meaningful way to make a change and honour this year’s NRW theme of ‘Be Brave. Make Change’, which challenges us to take action and ‘tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for the benefit of all Australians’.

All the funds from Wear it Yellow go to Children’s Ground’s innovative learning and wellbeing work for First Nations communities in the Northern Territory and Central Australia. Led by First Nations Elders and educators, this educational approach privileges First Nations culture while incorporating the best of Western teaching.
