In the warm evening air and late light of Monday evening, this year’s MPavilion was unveiled to the public. Designed by Spanish architect Carme Pinós of the famed Estudio Carme Pinós, the fifth form of the Naomi Milgrom Foundation-commissioned public structure will be host to a program of hundreds of free events over the spring/summer months, featuring renowned local and international guests.

Inhabiting the Queen Victoria Gardens in the hub of Melbourne’s arts precinct, Carme’s summer pavilion takes on an origami-like form, with geometric flat planes sheltering the open event space, and tiered seating incorporated into gently landscaped, grassy knolls. Latticed timber embraces the natural environment and allows optimum flexibility for Melbourne’s varying weather conditions, offering both protection from and engagement with the elements. In line with the philosophy of MPavilion, the design encourages connection and community.

‘In designing this year’s MPavilion, I wanted firstly to make a space for the people of Melbourne to feel connected—to each other, to the city they live in, and to nature,’ Carme explains of her approach to MPavilion, ‘We are all part of the world, and architecture can tell that story and provide a place for us to experience life together.’

Now in its fifth year, MPavilion and its associated public events have become a summer community staple in the city, it’s opening marking the beginning of the best time of the year where Melbournian’s re emerge from their winter hibernation to engage with each other and the city!
