Melbourne’s Australian Centre for the Moving Image will host screenings of a documentary about international design legend Dieter Rams for two weeks in late March-mid April. The German industrial designer is acclaimed as one of the most formative figure in design over the past 50 years, widely considered to have helped shaped our modern world.

Directed by American independent filmmaker Gary Hustwit (best known for his 2007 documentary about the proliferation of one typeface, Helvetica), Rams offers a rare insight into the interior world of this notoriously private figure.

Known for his ‘less is more’ approach, Dieter Rams’ 10 Principles For Good Design are taught in classrooms worldwide, and referenced by some of the biggest brands in our world today. Apple’s minimalist product designs are clearly influenced by Rams’ philosophies, and his iconic design for the Braun ET66 calculator is replicated in the iPhone calculator app!

Featuring an original score by legendary musician Brian Eno, Rams is as much a commentary on consumerism, materialism, and sustainability as it is about design.

The documentary will at ACMI run for two weeks from March 28th – April 9th. Don’t miss out – it’s the only place you can see Rams in Australia right now!
