Discussing a swimmable Yarra River and an exhibition of designer-made items created from waste are just a couple of the events on the program for the biggest-ever Melbourne Design Week. Melbourne will be transformed into a sprawling design hub over 10 days in March, with over 200 events taking place at locations across the city (and some even in Geelong!).

Looking towards the future, the program of exhibitions, films, talks, tours, and workshops focuses heavily on waste, sustainability, and how design can change our cities for good. Some of the city’s leading creatives including Christopher Boots, Anna Varendorff and Adam Cornish come together for Welcome to Wasteland, an exhibition that challenges each designer to create everyday items made from everyday waste.

Local architecture is also championed. See John Wardle Architects’ immersive installation Somewhere Other, which will be erected in the halls of the NGV, after returning home from the 2018 Venice Biennale of Architecture.

The Guardian’s architecture and design critic Oliver Wainwright is a Melbourne Design Week keynote speaker, he will deliver a fascinating talk on the global housing crisis, questioning who controls the market and the role that architects play is designing the future.
