In our increasingly digital society, a new Melbourne Design Week exhibition holds space for us to interact, touch and engage with objects in the real world. Presented by art director Marsha Golemac, Material Culture explores the importance of tactility and tradition in today’s age.

The unique showcase features the work of 16 designers, makers and artists who’ve embraced traditional and ultra-modern techniques in object design. They’ve each created a piece that examines old and new ideas, processes, or materials in hopes of questioning why and how things are made.

See thoughtful and creative, everyday objects like an incredible screen wall inspired by the rich history of weaving from one of our favourite furniture designers, Nicole Lawrence, or a dreamy clay sculpture informed by the look of chain mail armour from Tamara Maynes.

Other amazing works include a sculptural chair made entirely from salvaged marble waste and steel offcuts by Second Edition, and an impressive woven grid by Jacqueline Stojanović! See all that and more in Fitzroy gallery space, At The Above.
