After months of shut doors due to Victoria’s lockdowns, Heide Museum of Modern Art is open again from this weekend!

Welcoming visitors back to the iconic gallery is the first ever retrospective of Margel Hinder, one of the best (and most under-recognised!) Australian sculptors of the 20th century. Heide is aiming to spotlight her incredible talent by hosting a survey of the artist’s work in collaboration with the Art Gallery of New South Wales: Margel Hinder: Modern in Motion.

Margel Hinder was born in Brooklyn, New York and moved to Australia in 1934 where she set about establishing a pioneering career in abstract sculpture. Her carved wood and stone sculptures combine sharp geometry and fluid forms, while kinetic wire shapes suspended from the ceiling display a fascination with futurism that enraptured the international modernists. You might recognise her work from Martin Place in Sydney, where a monolithic, spidery sculpture she was commissioned to produce stands guard outside the Reserve Bank.

The exhibition brings together 70 sculptures from private and public collections around the country, which were created over the artist’s five-decade career. From her early carvings and archival biographical materials to life-sized digital reconstructions of her most celebrated public art monuments, the exhibition aims to re-establish Hinder as one of Australia’s pre-eminent abstract artists. We can’t wait to see it!
