Bookstores around the country are opening their doors this Saturday for Love Your Bookshop Day!

This now annual event is a celebration of what makes local bookstores so great. Among those participating is Collingwood books, vinyl and gift store, Happy Valley, who will be donating all their profits on the day to the Cancer Council.

‘We hope to raise to $3000 to $4000 in profits on the day,’ says Happy Valley owner Chris Crouch. ‘In celebrating local bookshops, we think it’s a great day to give back to the community, and in this case, the Cancer Council.’

Love Your Bookshop Day started after the success of Record Store Day that was founded over 10 years ago to support independent record retailers. Chris is certainly familiar with this event and its positive impact as the former owner of record store, Polyester Records, and music label, Candle Records.

‘A few years later, with many small bookshops closing, the book industry replicated the idea to create a bookshop day,’ he says. ‘Within Australia, many stores [now] hold special events, author signings, readings, and giveaways to celebrate the day.

If you only come and visit us one day a year, make sure it’s this Saturday!’
