Tasmanian locals and visitors – this one’s for you! Happening over the next four weeks at Launceston’s Design Tasmania is Japan: Archipelago Of The House, an exhibition exploring contemporary Japanese residential architecture. 

Westerners have long been influenced by Japanese domestic architecture, particularly the use of materials and space, but these projects are often removed from their historical and cultural context. Japan: Archipelago of the House presents an immersive understanding of these rich and varied environments, revealing lived-in and practical homes. The exhibition is presented through drawings, photographs, videos, and interviews, displaying the works of 58 architects across more than 70 projects.

Japan: Archipelago of the House is a touring exhibition most recently showing at Yale University. It was first conceived by three French architects, Veronique Hours, Fabien Manduit, Manuel Tardits, and London-based photographer, Jérémie Souteyrat, in 2013. Design Tasmania is hosting the third English-language iteration of the exhibition, curated by University of Tasmania’s professor of architecture, Dr Julian Worrall and the gallery’s executive director, Claire Beale.

20th century: Kenzo Tange, Tadao Ando, Kunio Maekawa, Kazuo Shinohara, Antonin Raymond, Kiyonori Kikutake, Osamu Ishiyama, Riken Yamamoto, and Toyo Ito

21st century: Kengo Kuma, Atelier Bow-wow, Shigeru Ban, Go Hasegawa, Yasushi Horibe, Taira Nishizawa, Mikan, Hideyuki Nakamura, Diasuke Sugawara, Suppose Design Office, Tezuka Architects, and Yasutaka Yoshimura.
