Building on the ‘learn through play’ early childhood standard set by Melbourne Museum’s Pauline Gandel Children’s Gallery, the screen-free exhibit ‘Ground Up: Building Big Ideas, Together‘ aims to prepare children aged one through five for a future in which an increasing number of jobs will rely on the STEM skills of problem-solving, hypothesising, experimenting and investigating.

Designers Scott Parker and Jacob Tolo worked in particular to create a space that would engage both girls and boys with science – with a gender neutral palette, emphasis on collaboration, and a female mascot called Dot for Dr Dorothy Hill, the first female fellow at the Australian Academy of Science.

We loved the Flight Tubes (where you can create contraptions to fly in huge wind tubes), Switch Wall (1,376 light switches that can be turned on and off to develop deductive thinking), and Car Wash (what could be better than activating giant blue car wash brushes?).

So next 35ºC+ day this school holidays, head to Ground Up to keep your kids cool, calm – and clever.

Scienceworks is open daily from 10am–4.30pm (closed Good Friday and Christmas Day).
