Everything is an adventure when you’re hanging out with kids. A trip to the shops could be a journey through an enchanted forest, the ground might be lava and a cardboard box can easily transition from a ship to a castle to a racing car. We all start with this imagination, but somewhere along the way it gets reshaped into something a little more orderly and structured. Melbourne-based artists Beci Orpin and Carla McRae explore what the world might look like if we were able to retain that childlike wonderment, in their playful new exhibition, Out of Bounds.

What if our play spaces were never abandoned, they just shifted forms?’, ask Beci and Carla in this show. It’s a question they’ve both enjoyed answering.

Sharing a love for bright colours and  graphic shapes in their artistic styles, it’s clear these two have explored their own relationship to playfulness in creating Out of Bounds. Phrases like ‘GO HAM’ and ‘PLAY UP’ sit alongside inquisitive characters, seen in paintings and woodcuts, while an abstract playground installation commands attention as a central feature in the space.

Beci and Carla don’t just want people to admire the work though; an interactive magnetic wall full of shapes encourages visitors to design their own experience of the exhibition, challenging grown ups to get out of ‘real’ world and into their imaginations, at least for a little while.
