Melbourne-based artist Ria Green has produced a stunning new body of pastel-hued works for her latest exhibition, Radiant Nature. Responding to time spent in Turin, Portugal, and Bariloche for artist residencies, the dreamy, abstract visions reference the light, landscape and natural environment of each unique location.

‘This exhibition communicates how light feels, looks, and is remembered when washing over the European landscape and beyond’, explains Ria. ‘My memory of it is gentle and warm, full of pinks and yellows enveloping little white towns and dry brown landscapes.’

Created back in Melbourne from her Northcote studio, Ria used a variety of pigments to create the gentle palette. The landscape she seeks to represent is physically present in Radiant Nature, using rocks collected from her travels crushed down by hand in a mortar and pestle. The powdered pigments are literally embedded in her paintings, where ‘not only is memory represented in the work, but an artefact from the original site is included also’, Ria tells.
