Fashion in Australia marches to the beat of its own drum. Our remote position away from the seasons and trends of more traditional European and American brands has allowed us to form our own style. But it hasn’t always been this way.

Kyoto-born designer Akira Isogawa is part of an ensemble of Australian fashion designers who have defined Australia’s fashion identity. Akira has been crafting his signature fusion of Japanese-inspired design sensibilities adapted for the contemporary Australian lifestyle over the course of his 25-year career.

An exhibition celebrating the acclaimed designer is opening this month at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney. Akira Isogawa traces Akira’s path from Kyoto the Sydney, delving into his formative years and the melting pot of cultural influences that made up his distinctive aesthetic.

A gorgeous new book illustrating the designer’s inspirations has also recently been released. With a forward from longtime admirer Cate Blanchett, Akira Isogawa Unfolding Fashion has been written by Akira in collaboration with renowned fashion writer Georgina Safe, telling his story through personal photos, sketches, memorabilia, keepsakes and detailed garment images. The perfect Chrissy gift for the style maven in your life!
