In June of 2018, Artedomus unveiled New Volumes, their boundary-pushing collection of objects and furniture crafted from Elba, a hard-wearing stone that traces back 250 million years.

For Melbourne Design Week, Artedomus creative director Thomas Coward and interior designer Fiona Lynch have embarked upon a creative collaboration to celebrate the collection. An exploration of form, function, and material, New Volumes is a feat of concept and design.

Comprising 12 pieces of furniture by eight leading Australian designers including Ross Gardam, Marsha Golemac and Dale Hardiman, the Elba-crafted collection balances durability and elegance, enhancing the timeless quality of these classic designs.

For Melbourne Design Week, Thomas and Fiona have envisioned a spectacular stone installation to highlight the modern artefacts in the New Volumes collection. A dense pile of stone mined from a quarry in Greece (where the Elba for New Volumes is sourced) is heaped and sprawling in the centre of the gallery space. Rising from the rubble, a series of Elba plinths carry objects from the New Volumes collection. While each piece is meticulously handcrafted, they seem ancient – as though they have always been there, naturally formed from the stone itself.

The exhibition will continue for the duration of Melbourne Design Week, and just so happens to be right downstairs from the TDF office! Pop by next week for a drink to celebrate the opening.

Opening drinks on Wednesday, March 20th from 6-8pm.
