In 2016, Melbourne gallerist Sophie Gannon first showed the inaugural edition of Designworks – an annual exhibition that explores works on the cusp of art and design.

This year as part of Melbourne Design Week, the respected Melbourne gallerist has teamed up with long-time Designworks collaborator Dale Hardiman (of Dowel Jones) and designer Stephen Royce for the fourth exhibition in the series, as well as interior designer Danielle Brustman.

Dale and Stephen explore light through common hand-held devices in Open Garden, using over 200 LCD mobile phone screens to construct a series of lighting pieces that reanimate the discarded technology. Eerily beautiful with a sense of uneasiness, Open Garden lays bare our disassociation from the devices that are so deeply ingrained within our lives.

Elsewhere in the gallery, interior designer Danielle Brustman presents Chromatic Fantastic, a collection of modular furniture, lighting and objects that proposes new modes of living. Working with Dulux, Danielle looks at the purpose of colour, form and function. A finalist in the prestigious Rigg Design Prize, and the recipient of Bank of Melbourne’s $30,000 residency program at Collingwood Art Precinct, Danielle’s work never fails to surprise and delight!
