Trust Sophie Gannon Gallery to have one of the hottest exhibitions of Melbourne Design Week! Volume III is a new solo show by local design studio Cordon Salon that playfully explores the nature of colour and perception through a series of handmade mirrors.

Creative director Ella Saddington was so inspired by artist Kate Mitchell’s recent exhibition, All Auras Touch, that she spent lockdown researching colour theory and psychology. She then worked closely with local craftspeople to transform transparent glass into a mirrored surface and incorporate multichromatic finishes developed from her research.

The result is the series of handmade, iridescent ‘puddle’ mirrors that comprise Volume III. Different colours border the straight edges of the rectangular glass frame, seeping towards the middle to create a curvy, reflective pool in the centre. The iridescent shades and liquid-like texture render the entire composition reminiscent of an arty oil slick! A free opening event will be held on March 27th at the gallery including a talk by Ella Saddington on the production process of her puddle mirrors.

If you’re unfamiliar with their work, Cordon Salon is focused on experimentation, whimsy and collaboration as a method for design. This exhibition continues the studio’s previous experiments combining antiquated silvering methods with contemporary materials and artistic perspectives.
