This weekend Heide MoMA opens a new exhibition by a host of different artists that looks at the vessel form. An Idea Needing to Be Made brings together 12 Australian and international artists with varying practices to examine the past and present of ceramics, and how different styles can approach the same idea.
The exhibition includes works by Australia’s most important ceramic artist, Gwyn Hanssen Pigott, whose exploration of the vessel and interrogation of still life tradition opened a new way of thinking for ceramicists about function, display and purpose.
International artists with works on show include UK-based Alison Britton’s groundbreaking off-kilter slab built shapes; US-based Kathy Butterly’s wobbly, scrunched and folded objects; and French King Houndekpinkou’s drippy, detailed silhouettes. Locally, Nicolette Johnson’s impeccable, otherworldly works sit alongside Simone Fraser’s coral-like pieces and Pippin Drysdale’s pebble-smooth forms.
