Ballarat will soon become a thriving epicentre for the arts as the Biennale of Australian Art (BOAA) transforms the regional Victorian city. Featuring the works of 150 diverse artists from across Australia, 65 curated solo exhibitions at 14 heritage venues over six weeks, this major exhibition is the largest-ever showcase of living Australian artists. The landmark event aims to portray Australian experiences past, present and future through a prism of different perspectives.

‘My vision for BOAA was to create a festival which showcases the diversity of Australian Art, one that would allow artists to tell our stories’, tells Julie Collins, BOAA’s Artistic Director, ‘Ballarat is the perfect scale town for a European styled Biennale, one that will create a whole of town experience’.

Among the 150-strong program of artists is the psychedelic dream scenes of Pip & Pop; the Aurukun Sculptor’s sacred, sculptural camp dogs; and four-time Archibald prize finalist, Abdul Abdullah.

Just a 90 minute drive North West of central Melbourne, BOAA is also an opportunity for visitors to experience Ballarat’s cultural offerings, with the entire city getting behind the six-week event to showcase the region’s very best food, wine, beer and live music.
