We’ve been eagerly awaiting the announcement of Australia’s richest portraiture prize this morning!

Drum roll…

Revered artist Tim Storrier’s ‘The Lunar Savant’ (2017) has been awarded the $150,000 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, as judged by a panel including: Daniel Thomas AM, Emeritus Director of the Art Gallery of South Australia; decorated artist Wendy Sharpe; and Greta Moran, Director of the Moran Arts Foundation.

The artwork (cropped detail pictured above) is a moonlit, emotive depiction of fellow artist McLean Edwards, and was chosen from 30 finalists, with over 1,130 artists entering the prize this year. Judge Wendy Sharpe, described the piece as ‘an arresting, intriguing image at once both disturbing and playful’.

Not quite as well-known as The Archibald Prize (which Tim also won in 2012!), The Doug Moran National Portrait Prize is actually Australia’s richest art prize, with prize pool of $180,000. Now in its 29th year, it welcomes entries of original works from Australian artists, capturing Australians from all walks of life.

Born in Sydney, Tim Storrier attended the National Art School and in 1994 was awarded the Order of Australia AM for his services to art. ‘We awarded the prize to Tim Storrier, a veteran artist who went outside his personal mythology and produced an affectionate, teasing, “friendship painting” of a wild fellow artist,’ said Daniel Thomas AM, at the announcement at Juniper Hall in Sydney this morning.

An exhibition of all finalists’ artworks opens tomorrow at the same historic Paddington venue. Don’t miss a chance to see Tim’s artwork in real life, and also look out for Dagmar Cyrulla’s ‘I am Woman’, which was highly commended.
