The Internet is a truly wonderful place. It can help bring together long-lost family members, connect life partners, and for artists Lucy Roleff and Luci Everett, nurture an online friendship that has led to an IRL exhibition!

The Melbourne-based artists have come together to explore a similar subject in very different styles of still life art for their joint exhibition, Still, at Memphis Projects in Abbottsford.  After admiring each other’s work online for some time, the Luci/y’s identified a similar spirit in their differing styles. Hanging works alongside each other’s in the gallery has highlighted some intriguing similarities and contrasts in their differing responses.

An illustrator, painter and musician, Lucy Roleff’s practise is the more traditional of the two, using oil paints to depict modern, everyday objects with references to still life compositions. Juxtaposing these are Luci Everett’s free-form, mixed media works. This playful art in vivid colours reflects Luci’s more figurative take on the still life genre.

It only took the duo a couple of months to put together their show, despite having never met each other before! ‘Lucy approached me asking if I’d be interested in doing a show together, as we were exploring similar subject matter but in very different ways which she thought would be quite complementary,’ explains Luci, ‘…It felt like a very natural pairing.’
