A Rare Robin Boyd House Is Available To Rent

Mid-century houses designed by Robin Boyd—arguably Australia’s most influential architect—are scarce, but it’s even rarer to find one for lease!

Boyd’s 1954 Bridgford House in Black Rock, Melbourne has hit the rental market, presenting a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to move into this famous home.

Not only is the house an incredible example of mid-century architecture, it’s located in a stellar position directly opposite Half Moon Bay!

Bridgford House at 242 Beach Road, Black Rock was designed by modernist architect Robin Boyd and completed in 1954.

It’s rare to see a Boyd home in such great condition, and even rarer to find one that’s available to rent!

Bridgford House was Boyd’s largest commission at the time, and the beauty of its mid-century architecture has been lovingly maintained for decades.

Occupying the majority of a corner site opposite Half Moon Bay, the house comprises a low-lying rectangular brick structure with a low-pitched roof form spanning almost the full width of the site.

Louvred pergolas to the north shade a courtyard running the full boundary. This outdoor space is framed indoors through expansive full-height glazing, creating the impression that the living spaces and garden are ‘virtually one.’

Materials are warm and robust, including pale orange double brick walls, timber-framed windows and lined ceilings, and steel.

Mid-century architecture enthusiasts were worried this house would be demolished when it last sold in 2018, but it was fortunately purchased by those dedicated to preserving its modern history.

If you’ve ever wanted to rent a Boyd home (with the added bonus of living directly opposite the beach), now’s your chance!

242 Beach Road, Black Rock, Victoria is listed with Jellis Craig for lease.
