Design lovers rejoice—Melbourne’s first HAY store is officially open!
Founded in Denmark in 2002, HAY creates contemporary furniture with an eye for modern living and sophisticated industrial manufacturing.
With a commitment to the design and production of furniture, lighting, and accessories with international appeal, the Danish brand makes good design accessible to the largest possible audience. Pieces are produced in collaboration with acclaimed designers including updated reissues of iconic vintage items.
The opening of the Melbourne store is HAY’s second retail location in Australia (joining the Crown Street, Sydney store) and coincides with the brand’s 20th anniversary.
The store is managed and operated by Cult Design, who are proud to bring the full retail HAY experience to local design lovers.
For Richard Munao, founder and managing director of Cult, the decision to open HAY in Fitzroy was a no brainer. ‘I’m extremely happy that we have found the right space on Johnston Street, Fitzroy,’ he says. ‘I happened to be driving past to go to a meeting and saw the space was for lease and called the agent straight away. It was the quickest signing of a lease ever.’
Much like the flagship store in Copenhagen, HAY Melbourne delights visitors with an open-plan space laid out as an apartment, offering a wide selection of furniture and accessories including sofas, lighting, textiles, and glassware.
HAY worked with local creatives to make the fit-out distinct to Melbourne, specifically its Fitzroy location. Local artist Jasmine Mansbridge painted the vibrant exterior mural, and the stand-out retail counter made from recycled milk bottle caps was designed by leading industrial designer Adam Goodrum in collaboration with plastic recycling company Defy Design.
‘We wanted to localise the store and reflect Melbourne’s street culture in the design,’ explains Richard of the vibrant mural.
Items in store include new releases such as the Rey chair (based on the original Rey Collection designed by Swiss designer Bruno Rey in 1971) Pao Portable Lamp by Naoto Fukasawa, as the best selling Colour Crates, glassware, and Palissade furniture range.
In addition to the launch of the Melbourne store, HAY has just released its first book with Phaidon exploring the brand’s origins and astronomical growth.
