Last year we revealed the richly textured and delightfully unexpected design of the Fantales House kitchen by award winning interior design studio YSG, in partnership with Laminex. Now, we step inside the living room, which is a study in balancing restful living with work-from-home needs.

Much like the kitchen, the living area and adjacent study nook are designed to meet the demands of work, play and rest. Yet, while the space shares key design elements with the kitchen, such as the Laminex woodgrain decors, dark-toned Danish Walnut and pale Milkwood; and the green-stained diagonally laid timber floorboards, it celebrates a softer colour palette.

YSG founder and principal Yasmine Ghoneim explains, “You walk from this quite cocoon-like experience of the kitchen into a living space which is a lot brighter, and just feels lighter.”

That’s not to say the space is without pockets of energy, however. The warmth of the kitchen is still present in “moments”, rather than being totally immersive. Behind tower cabinetry, crafted from Laminex Danish Walnut and Milkwood, sits vibrant red shelving in Laminex Pillarbox with an extra-thick bullnose profile.

These shelves also feature in the study nook, and provide brilliant contrast to the soft presence of Laminex Porcelain Blush elsewhere. This study zone is seamlessly integrated into the living room, with sliding screens to section it off when needed – the perfect working-from-home solution!

“YSG does a lot of things with screens in our projects. I love being able to get a glimpse of what’s beyond. And this was a great opportunity to showcase how you can do the same thing not just out of timber, but with laminate,” says Yasmine.

With its animated and dynamic design, this space effortlessly balances hard working functionality with irresistible visual appeal.

“There’s an ease to this space,” explains Yasmine. “There’s nothing too fancy, too fragile, too precious. And it’s actually really achievable. A lot of the materiality is really cost effective, it’s just thought about slightly differently.”
