An Epic Collaboration Between Two Local Icons, David Bromley + Review!

There are few things we love more than a BIG collaboration between a talented local creative and a well-known Australian brand. And this one by David Bromley and fashion label Review is giving us all the feel-good spring-time vibes!

The 60-piece (!) collection of apparel and accessories features four prints handpainted by David in his signature style. Decorative elements taken from these paintings, like butterflies, flowers and summer fruits adorn Review’s feminine, vintage-inspired silhouettes, to make a timeless collection that transcends seasonal trends.

We went behind-the-scenes at David’s incredible South Yarra studio and showroom and to learn about the collection!

Despite its stalwart presence in the local fashion industry for the last 35 years, Review has never before created a collection in collaboration with an artist. So, for their first artist collab ever, the classic Australian label looked for someone with their own iconic creative legacy to rise to the occasion. David Bromley was the perfect fit!

‘There are themes such as florals and butterflies that feature heavily in David’s back catalogue, which have a great synergy with Review,’ explains Review’s General Manager, Clare Hurley. ‘We knew our customers could identify and connect these themes with the brand, even though they were such a different interpretation from how customers would normally see a floral print being done in a Review dress.’

Collaborating closely with his wife Yuge, David and the Review team went back through his archives, unearthing some of the artist’s most iconic paintings and motifs. David then created a series of new artworks, which became the starting point for a collection of textile prints across the 60-piece collection: summer fruits, two floral designs and his signature butterflies. These feature across dresses, tops, skirts, fully fashioned knitwear, shoes and accessories.

The artist underwent a few processes to arrive at these final designs. The first was a standard pattern design, where he created stand-alone custom paintings which the Review team then reproduced as fabric patterns.

The second process was more unique: David hand-painted his designs onto dress patterns that Review provided for him. ‘For this process, I worked in my Daylesford studio to first hand-dye, colour then paint the designs directly onto the patterns,’ the artist explains. ‘The patterns were then scanned in their entirety and reproduced exactly as I had painted them to form a series of limited edition dresses.’

Illuminated in rich, contrasting palettes, these painterly designs are totally eye-catching, bridging Review’s timeless silhouettes with David’s bold and contemporary painting style. You can even see the individual brushstrokes of the original artworks across each piece. We love!

To celebrate this exciting collaboration, one lucky Review customer will WIN their very own Bromley portrait! To be eligible, customers must be a Review member and spend $200 or more in the one transaction. See the competition terms and full collection here.
