The world as we know it has changed over the last 18 months, and so have the parameters for residential design. Our homes are not only our sanctuaries, but also our workspaces and playgrounds. More than ever our spaces need to be flexible, multi-functional and bring a little JOY back into our everyday lives!

The award-winning interior designers at YSG Studio are known for their boundary-pushing, sophisticated residential design, making them the perfect collaborators to envision two hardworking home spaces for Laminex. Bringing to life a kitchen, living space, and study nook, YSG Studio have brilliantly showcased the playful and practical possibilities of Laminex laminate surfaces.

Explaining her practice’s design philosophy, YSG Studio founder Yasmine Ghoniem says: ‘YSG’s approach to design is always: how can we be different? How can we think outside the box? How can we offer a different solution to an everyday problem?’ This desire for difference is a trademark of all YSG projects, and is perfectly illustrated in both of the spaces designed for Laminex.

Playing with the theme of ‘afternoon delight’, YSG Studio designed a warm, richly layered kitchen as the centrepiece of this collaboration. A tonal palette of Burnt Ochre wraps the cabinetry, custom handles and integrated fridge, with added richness and depth brought it by the use of Moroccan Clay on the benchtops and splashback. A defining feature of all YSG Spaces is texture, which is illustrated here through the use of contrasting Danish Walnut and Milkwood Natural on the island bench, which Yasmine says is the ‘hero of this space’. Moments of surprise and delight are found with eye-catching pops of bright blue Fresh Spring laminate internally lining in the cupboards and drawers.

These injections of colour, along with sculptural finishes, are what link these adjoining spaces.

In the process of bringing this project to life, Yasmine and her team asked themselves, ‘How can we make somebody just never want to leave this space?’ Mission accomplished, we’d say!

The Fantales kitchen is ready to be explored now, and we’ll share the living space in early 2022.
