Grand warehouse conversions are few and far between in Melbourne. Especially ones this big!

At approximately 520 square metres, this five-bedroom family home is split across two storeys to accommodate all generations of a large and ageing family. The building was reportedly constructed in the 1870s as a clothing factory, before being reincarnated as an art gallery, photo studio, architects’ office and finally a residential apartment block in the 1990s.

When the current homeowners acquired the property in 2015, it was just the one unit on the first floor for sale. While entranced by the five metre high ceilings and city views, they envisioned a multi-storey home for their family, with the downstairs floor as a teenager’s wing and a level upstairs revamped as the parents’ retreat.

A successful door knock later, and the owners of the unit downstairs agreed to sell, delivering the owners their dream property! They enlisted designers Florian Kaiser and Alice Parker to help them with the renovation, as well as the Cod Build construction team to realise their final vision.

The result is a jaw-dropping grand warehouse containing four bathrooms, a study, terrace, multiple living zones, garage and luxe kitchen. Exposed timber beams and glorious lofty ceilings give a nod to the building’s former industrial character.

Tucked in the desirable pocket just off Swan Street, inner-city living doesn’t get much better than this!

2-3/29 Gipps Street will be sold by Peter Stephens and Isabelle McEwan Marion from Nelson Alexander via private auction on Thursday June 3rd. See the full listing here.
