Getting Cosy With Tammy Kanat

It is the time of year when the days are shorter, and evenings are spent hunkered down at home watching endless re-hashes of the #royalwedding, hopefully with a warm pet/pal/loved one to snuggle!

Perfect timing then, for the release of Tammy Kanat’s new collaboration with Creswick Wool – a range of throws, in gentle, natural tones, and cosy-as-a-cloud alpaca and lambswool.

Since we first featured Melbourne-based weaver and fibre artist Tammy Kanat on TDF in 2017, the talented creative’s business has ramped up a notch! With her distinctive circular woven pieces in hot demand, Tammy describes her career over the past few years as an organic evolution, based on the pursuit of, simply ‘doing what I love.’

Tammy’s latest collaboration emerged from experimentation with various weaving styles as part of two works commissioned for the Creswick Woollen Mills 70th anniversary last year. From this, a partnership blossomed with the family-owned local business, and it quickly became apparent to Tammy that everything produced at Creswick was done with great ‘soul and care.’

The Australian-made range uses 100% natural fibres of alpaca and lambswool – and you can almost feel the softness through the computer screen! Closely involved in the selection of colours and fibres used, Tammy describes the throws as ‘an interpretation of my work’.

While Tammy loves to spend time snuggled under her Creswick throw on the couch watching Netflix, she says she is happiest when working on the loom, surrounded by studio mess. Next up, she will be exhibiting at Denfair with Cadrys, whilst continuing to work on her own large-scale works for clients around the world.
