Købn Towels

YES this is a whole post about towels.

They are, however, VERY nice towels, designed in Melbourne by Sophie Matson, whose previous career experience includes 12 years designing textiles and homewares at Country Road.

They’re called  Købn. We like them a lot.

Melbourne-based Sophie Matson is Founder and  Creative Director of Købn. A textile designer by training, Sophie launched her own brand after 12 years working at Country Road, in a variety of roles, including as Senior Textile Designer. During her time at the Country Road, Sophie designed much of the brand’s home textile product range, which of course included their iconic beach towel.

‘I always knew one day I would have my own label, and within days of leaving my job, the Købn concept was realised,’ Sophie explains. The designs, branding, art direction and overall aesthetic of Købn rolled out organically from there! ‘I really didn’t go into it with any expectations or thought, but more of an attitude to just go for it!’ Sophie recalls!

Sophie’s towels are designed with interiors trends in mind, rather than with a specific ‘beachy’ vibe. At 100 x 180cm, they are generous in size, and feature raw edge fringing and contemporary ‘drop pile’ stripes. Also, we LOVE the colour palette (muted blush with coral detail, and teal with powder blue, yes please!)

Currently, Sophie designs from her home studio in Ivanhoe. The towels are then crafted by a family-owned mill in Denizli, Turkey. ‘This region is synonymous with high-quality textiles, ensuring impeccable fabrication and ethical production,’ Sophie details.

Though it’s still super early days for Sophie’s brand, she’s been encouraged by the response so far. ‘I almost tear up when people tell me how much they love it!’ she confesses! ‘Landing dream stockists from the initial launch has been overwhelming and reassuring.’ In 2018, she has her sights set on overseas stockists, expanding the range and some collaborations… watch this space!
