When online retailers pop-up in the real world, being both style-savvy and personable can make all the difference, and this crew has got style and character in spades. Sharp and sophisticated are apt words to describe the combined work of ANTLER and MOSS and fifteenthirtyeight, who have just joined forces to open a pop-up shop on James Street in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley.
The store’s black, white and brass theme is complemented by clean lines, whilst potted plants soften sharp edges, and help blur the line between inside and out. It’s a calming, yet contemporary space showcasing fifteenthirtyeight’s planters, plant hangers and steel furniture, alongside ceramic tableware, textiles and hand-crafted timber wares from ANTLER and MOSS.
ANTLER and MOSS is a Brisbane based retailer of handcrafted homewares, offering a collection of locally made pieces (predominantly ceramics) in timeless neutral tones. It’s the creation of retail curator and stylist, Mel Lewis, who says ‘there is nothing better than a beautifully set dinner table full of artisan wares – it makes an ordinary meal feel special!’
Meanwhile, fifteenthirtyeight offers a range of contemporary industrial furniture and objects, and is the business of partners in both life and ‘crime’, Kitty Danger and Al Barras (those names – surely gangsters in a previous life!). All pieces are designed and made by this lively twosome in their Brisbane south-side workshop. ‘While we love architecture and mid-century lines, we’re also very influenced by how industrial materials can dictate the aesthetic of a piece,’ mentions Kitty. ‘We predominantly use steel, which is tough but lends itself to many forms. We also use brass, marble, glass and concrete.’
The group met when Mel got in contact with Al and Kitty to ask if she could stock their Botanist Plant Hanger. At the time, Kitty and Al were on the hunt for an Australian handmade ceramic pot to accompany their plant hangers and stands, so it was a timely union! With their shared interests, the group instantly clicked, and started brainstorming for a future pop-up collaboration. The rest, as they say, is history!
The ANTLER and MOSS + fifteenthirtyeight pop-up will run until the end of May 2016 at 46 James Street, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane. Open from Tuesday to Friday 10am-5pm, and Saturday and Sunday 10am – 4pm.
