Melbourne sisters Bliss and Bonnie Adams are a pretty perfect pairing when it comes to creative collaboration. Bonnie has an art background, having studied Visual Arts at Monash Uni, where she majored in metalwork and jewellery making, whilst Bliss studied Media and Communications at Melbourne Uni, and has worked in both TV production and interior design. Last year, this creative pair joined forces to launch their debut range of homewares under the name Marble Basics.
‘People say working with family can be difficult, but we find working together rewarding and fun, we laugh the whole day’ says Bonnie. ‘It works because we are on the same page and share the same design aesthetic. We have always been very close and it seemed natural to start a business together’
With clean lines and sleek, contemporary shapes, the Marble Basics range is aesthetically striking, but first and foremost, the range is designed to be functional. ‘Our intention was to create accessible marble products that are inherently functional’ says Bliss. ‘We wanted to offer customers a slice of a remarkable material, in basic designs that are usable in everyday life’.
The intricate natural markings and unique beauty of marble has always fascinated both sisters. ‘Every piece has its own story to tell’ says Bonnie. ‘It is remarkable how one piece varies so much from another’.
Bliss and Bonnie design all their products together. They play with geometry; shape and scale, thinking carefully about the end use of each item. The products are then made abroad, which has given this industrious pair an excuse to travel together regularly to visit their suppliers, where they love to be ‘flooded with sensory overload and adventure!’.
Marble Basics are available online and at national stockists listed here – their next collection will launch in July.
