We first met Mornington Peninsula based designer Emma Cleine of Lumiere Art & Co. in early 2012, when we featured her gorgeous debut range of cushions and prints.  Recently we were excited to learn that Emma had expanded her range to include complete bedding options (quilt covers, throws and pillow cases), as well as sweet handprinted linen storage sacks, all made locally. The new range, entitled 'Wish I Were There', has given Emma the chance to explore lots of new printing and dying techniques. The reversible storage sacks (called 'Linen Buckets') are hand dyed and printed by Emma (using potato prints!), whilst some of the larger pieces have allowed her to experiment with digital printing, utilising the services of much loved local textile printing studio Frankie and Swiss.   She's also been very inspired by a new technique called 'ice dying'. 'In the Northern hemisphere this can be done using snow' explains Emma, 'but I have been buying bags and bags of ice from my local bottle shop - I'm now convinced they now think I'm lying about the dyeing and think I'm the Peninsula's biggest party-girl!  I've adapted the technique to suit my set up, which is very 'home grown' - I use seedling trays to set up the fabric, then pile on the ice. I then sprinkle dye over the ice and let it melt. After rinsing and drying, the effect is magical - each piece is different, depending on how the ice melts and the amount of dye sprinkled. It almost looks floral'. Our top pick from Emma's new range is the amazing Botanical Orb quilt, pictured up top! I love the sense of nostalgia in this design, and the unexpected mix of colours - it almost feels like a vintage find rather than a brand new creation. There are lots more prints and soft furnishings to admire on Emma's website - do pop over for a look at the full range.  Her work can be bought online and is available from stockists nationally (and in New Zealand!), listed here.
