When researching potential creative fellas to profile this week, I put the word out amongst all the cool lads I know, asking for suggestions.  One dear friend was ADAMANT I needed to meet Malachi Moxon.  (Thankyou Jona!) Malachi is such a unique Melbourne character.  I must admit, for a split second I was a little nervous to get in touch. I got the vague impression he might be a bit 'gruff'.  I don't know why.  Maybe it's the beard.  In truth, once he's warmed up, Malachi is incredibly friendly and open - he even held his judgement when I admitted I don't currently own a bike!  Oh I know, the shame.  He's no nonsense, for sure... but Malachi always seems to have a twinkle in his eye.   And he's very patient in front of the camera! Malachi's beautiful little store, Northside Wheelers, has a cult following amongst Melbourne cyclists. It's only tiny, but stocks a seriously cool edit of high end cycling apparel, accessories, mens skincare and vintage cycling ephemera. All the brands and products here are things Malachi swears by, because as he says (in typical no-nonsense fashion) - 'It makes sense to stock products that you're confident with yourself , that way you can sell them much easier'. And when it comes to cycling gear, this is a guy who knows what he's talking about.  Malachi is a passionate cyclist, having raced at a semi professional level for most of his life. Born in North Yorkshire in the UK, Malachi got his first bike at age 4. 'That's where it started' he recalls. 'For me it was Freedom.  It allowed me to go on adventures, and that's still happening today' 'I got into racing mountain bikes around 1994.  I had a few good seasons riding for GT Bicycles, Norco and Giant, and got my self a National Title 97/98, which led to be offered a job in a bike shop' Malachi explains. After managing a bunch of popular bike stores in Melbourne, Malachi was inspired to open his own little retail offering just over two years ago. Malachi is still racing at a high level in Melbourne and nationally, as part of Stay True Racing sponsored by Giant Bicycles.  He races every weekend, and he has NEVER driven a car (ever!). 'Well, I don't have a license, and I am 50, so I reckon I can get through without one now!!'  he says! Despite the instagram-vibe of the shot below, sent to me by Malachi, I thought it was such a lovely way to end today's post.  'This photo sums up exactly how I feel about being on a bike.  I did not write it - but it sums me up!' says Malachi.  See, nothing but a big softie at heart!
