Good morning and HAPPY NEW YEAR dear readers!   Wowsers 2012 already... the treadmill starts up again!

Melbourne still feels a little sleepy this week, and I have a sneaking suspicion many of you may still be on holidayyyyy... so we're kicking things off with a project that has certain summer holiday-ness about it. (Truth be told I really should have covered this one before Christmas. Whoops it got a little crazy back there, sorry Matt!).

The Casual Cyclists Guide is a new and very cute publication written by Matt Hurst of The Humble Vintage, with contributions by many super cool and super witty bike-loving Melburnians including Oslo Davis, Penny Modra and Max Olijnyk.  These are multitalented and VERY ENTERTAINING PEOPLE, people.   They are people who know how to write, draw, and ride bikes.

Billed as a collection of 'routes, rides, rants and raves about the city and the bike', The Casual Cyclists Guide is as entertaining as it is densely informative, and at just $19.95 makes the sweetest gift for any local cycle enthusiast.  It's not really a guide book - I actually reckon it's more of a cultural snapshot of Melbourne bike culture in 2011/12, covering a great variety of topics, from lycra and bicycle maintenance to architecture and art openings. I think some good citizen or sociologist should definitely squirrel a copy away in a time capsule so that future generations have a good understanding of the hipster scene in Melbourne at this time!

Grab a copy here, or from good local bookshops, like Readings.
