Madame Truffles - Pop-Up Truffle Shop in South Melbourne.  Shop design and construction by Greg Hatton and Leila Sanderson and flowers by Katie Marx. Thanks to Leila Sanderson for the tip-off and most of these photographs!

OK I give in.  I am officially announcing Melbourne 'Town of the Pop-Up'.  I think I shall make a formal request at Vic Roads to have this put this on all Victorian number plates. Who's with me?

YES yes it's another Pop-Up.  BUT A foodie one.  You may wonder 'what on earth has FOOD to do with The Design Files?' - fair question, but when Madame Truffles roped in the likes of Greg Hatton, Leila Sanderson and fabulous florist Katie Marx to create her temporary truffle shop in South Melbourne last week, that's when my ears pricked up.

In keeping with their signature style, longtime collaborators Greg and Leila (aka Twiggy and Skinny!) have utilised recycled materials to transform a small annex of St Ali cafe in South Melbourne into a quaint retail space with a rustic / woodland vibe.  (They do rustic / woodland particularly well!).

Just to be CLEAR, Madame Truffles is all about the woody, mushroomy variety of truffle, not the rich chocolate variety.  She's open Thursday til Sunday, 10.00am - 6.00pm for the entire month of July... and by golly, she's one popular truffle hunter.  In her very first weekend of operation, she sold out of the nobbly little flavour nuggets completely... but never fear, she'll be back in stock this Thursday with an incredible variety of freshly harvested Tasmanian, Western Australian and New South Wales truffles.

Madame Truffles has a very cute website which explains a little of her quest to share her knowledge and love of Australian truffles.  It appears she is on a one-woman mission to dispel some misconceptions and confusion about buying and cooking this flavoursome delicacy!   With her 4-week Pop-Up, and recipes available on her website, Madame Truffles hopes to introduce more and more local food lovers to the humble Australian truffle!

Open Thursday - Sunday, 10.00am - 6.00pm for the month of July

Keep an eye on the Madame Truffles website for info about upcoming events in the space... apparently there's something a bit special on the cards for Bastille Day very soon!
