Scrapwood Wallpaper by Piet Hein Eek – now at Safari Living

Scrapwood Wallpaper by Piet Hien Eek, now available at Safari Living in Melbourne

Oh my.  This is completely amazing.  Scrapwood wallpaper by brilliant Dutch designer Piet Hien Eek, now available at Safari Living in Melbourne (and online). So incredible!  Piet’s signature rustic assemblages of reclaimed timber are captured so photo-realistically – it really does require a double-take!

Ok so it’s not an Australian design (clearly), but so striking I just had to share! AND I think Safari Living deserves a little credit for bringing this and so many other gorgeous products across the equator for us to admire in person – and not just online! :)

Lovely stuff.  I want some.

PS. We do love Safari rather a lot around here, as proprietor Felicity Rulikowski has been one of TDF’s longest standing supporters and always has her finger on the pulse!

Love this shot!  Can I get me some of those fab rustic stools with my wallpaper please?

Interview – Jason Cesani of Printink Studio

Bespoke wallpaper designs by  Tinker / Printink Studio in North Melbourne

Today is a bit of a first.  My somewhat sporadic column in The Age Melbourne Magazine is BACK today after a bit of a hiatus (Angus Holland was very apologetic – he’s had a lot of content shuffling to deal with in the past few months!).  To mark this auspicious occasion, and to make the most of this wonderful ongoing opportunity to promote local design in an actual NEWSPAPER (amazing!), I have decided to do my best to link The Design Files’ interview content once a month with my Melbourne Magazine page!  How brilliantly organised is that?  We’ll see how long it lasts.

If you already have The Age, perhaps you will have spotted the ‘Printed Matter’ story, which rounds up the very best in locally printed design!  Of course many of the studios mentioned will be familiar to you guys – Spacecraft, Ink & Spindle, Bonnie and Neil… and the very talented peeps at Printink, who design and print the Tinker homewares and wallpaper range!

It was kind of hard to find someone in this mix who I hadn’t already interviewed (Stewart Russell – tick, Ink & Spindle – tick), but then it hit me – JASON CESANI – the perfect candidate!  In actual fact, this interview really is very long overdue… I met Jason last year when he took on a custom and somewhat mind-bending large scale print job for me… and it was then that I realised just how brilliantly talented and experienced he and the Printink team truly are.

Printink is run by Jason and fellow print lovers Nadia Husiak and Lisa Carroll, who met many moons ago while studying textile design at RMIT.  They offer a completely bespoke printing service for custom one-off printing, and in fact they print for many fab local designers you probably know such as Aunty Cookie and CastleTinker is their own range of beautiful homewares, which can be purchased from their website and stockists Australia-wide.

Like pretty much every local creative I seem to meet these days, in addition to being extremely talented, Jason is also exceptionally NICE.  Truly.  So sweet and patient.  I’ve found myself dashing in to Printink’s North Melbourne studio on more than one occasion with some flustered last minute request, and he’s always so chilled and helpful and kind of zen about every challenge he’s ever faced with!   It’s very much appreciated by all you work with Jason!

ps) special thanks to super talented photographer Paul Barbera, for allowing me to share some of his shots of the Printink studio.  For many more beautiful shots please pop over to Where They Create.

Binny Talib

Wallpaper by Sydney-based illustrator Binny Talib – available in Australia from IMGS Custom Wallcoverings.

Some of Binny’s super cute repeating designs – Clockwise from top left, Pups in a Cup, Cloud Princess, Raindrops, and Living in a Droplet (!!)

Top design – Two Little Ears, Bottom design - Squishy Family.

Binny Talib is a brilliant Sydney-based illustrator and surface / textile designer who appears to be as switched on in business as she is with a paintbrush! Binny creates beautiful illustrated designs in a naïve style, inspired by childhood dreams. Her work has graced many local and international products from children’s toys to clothing, textiles, wallpaper, books and greeting cards.

After originally studying Visual communications at UTS in Sydney, Binny found work in broadcast and web design, and became a Creative Director. After the dot com crash she took the plunge and went into freelance design / illustration – and she says it’s been onwards and upwards since then!  In the past few years she’s landed a New York agent, developed a children’s clothing label, moved into the children’s book market – and even worked as creative director for a Japanese children’s charity!

After successfully securing varied licensing deals in the US, UK, Japan and Australia, this year Binny has launched her very own wallpaper collection, available in Sweden and Australia! SO freaking CUTE!

GOD I need a child just so I have an excuse to wallpaper these amazing raindrops all over his/her bedroom.

oh ps. Binny has a cute little blog over here!

Binny chose ‘Cloud Princess‘ for her own daughter’s bedroom at home!

Cuteness.

Harvest Textiles – One Day Wallpaper workshop!

Wallpaper and recycled textiles by UK-based Australian designer Clara Vuletich, who will take a one day wallpaper workshop for Harvest Textiles next month.

Screenprinting workshops with Harvest Textiles

Harvest Workshop video by Angus Booker at Lettuce Systems. Doesn’t it look super FUN!? (and productive!)

I literally cannot keep up with the amount of creative talent in this city… It seems every WEEK there is something new to see / buy / learn / discover!

Harvest Textiles are a gorgeous local craft start-up with a difference – whilst they do sell a select range of beautiful screenprinted wares online, the main focus of their business is running workshops teaching their craft to others.  I have heard SUCH great things about the Harvest Textiles screenprinting workshops… glowing reports, I tell ya.

Harvest is run by three talented local ladies – Lara, Emma and Jess (you can read about them over here!).  They currently share Ink & Spindle‘s beautiful Kensington studio, however in exciting news, the trio are soon moving to their very own space in Brunswick!  Congratulations ladies!

Harvest have hooked up with UK-based Australian textile designer Clara Vuletich, who will take a one-day wallpaper printing class next month!   Clara is a researcher at Chelsea College of Art & Design, London, and of course her work is insanely AMAZING – have a little look on Clara’s blog and see for yourself!  All participants of the wallpaper workshop will design and print a bold, geometric wallpaper panel under Clara’s expert guidance.  There are only 8 places so best to book in quick!  Class runs on Sunday October 17th – no experience necessary, all materials provided.

The Selvedge Group

Wallpaper design by NY-based design duo Trove, available in Australia through The Selvedge Group.

The Selvedge Group are one of my newest site sponsors… and whilst I am always very conscious of keeping editorial content strictly separate from the advertising on this site(!!), when I checked out their website after they placed their ad a week or so ago, I was SO blown away by their incredible products, I just had to share!

The Selvedge Group is an Australian distributor of boutique wallpapers and textiles… most of their exquisite designs are sourced from overseas – from long established brands such as Olicana, to the coolest new kids in print and pattern design such NY-based design duo Trove, and amazing young UK designer Erica Wakerly. I truly have not seen such an incredible and diverse range all in one place..! The Selvedge Group clearly have their finger firmly on the pulse of international textile and pattern design!

Do pop over to browse through even more of The Selvedge Group’s gorgeous things… a list of retail stockists is also on their website.

OMG I have died and gone to wallpaper heaven. So simple, striking yet understated. Erica Wakerly you are a genius.

Studio Nommo

Bespoke digitally-printed wallpapers by Istabul-based Studio Nommo

Studio Nommo is an Istanbul-based bespoke wallpaper company that collaborates with emerging and established designers from all over the world to create their vibrant and slightly wacky wallpaper and wall sticker designs. I realise the design world is pretty much at full capacity already when it comes to illustrated wallpapers and wall stickers… but there is just something about Studio Nommo which is begging me to blog blog blog them! :) The designs are just so kooky and busy and brave… possibly best relegated to kids’ rooms, but nevertheless they are lovely to look at, and make for some really gorgeous and interesting interior spaces to browse through on the Studio Nommo website.

Studio Nommo is slightly different from your average bespoke wallpaper company, in that they digitally print their papers on demand – allowing a lot of freedom to customise each order. You can scale their designs to exactly fit your wall (with a handy web tool which allows you to superimpose their designs onto your own photos for a virtual preview)… OR you can even send them your very own design and they will print it for you within a 3-week turnaround time! AMAZING.

Studio Nommo ship worldwide… and at approx AU$180 per wallpaper roll (10.75m long), they are actually insanely good value for bespoke wallpaper…. or any large-format printing for that matter.

Australians readers! …there really has never been a better exchange rate for spontaneous online shopping…!
