Sixhands

Stunning soft furnishings and accessories by Sydney textile designers Sixhands

How outrageously fabulous are these textile designs by Sydney based creative trio Sixhands!?  I am wondering how on earth I did not know about them earlier. Aghhh I HATE when I am not first off the mark!  Ha ha.  No, seriously, I really hate it.

ANYWAY.  Better late than never!

First launched in 2006 by designers Alecia Jensen, Anna Harves and Brianna Pike, Sixhands originally found their calling specialising in printed textiles for the fashion industry. Their stunning work was quickly picked up by many of Australia’s best known fashion brands – including Sportsgirl, Alannah Hill, Wayne Cooper and Bianca Spender.

In recent years this talented team have turned their attention to an incredible in-house range of  soft furnishings and home accessories – including cushions, lampshades, rugs and wallpapers.   It is SUCH a truly stunning collection, and incorporates an immense variety of layered visual elements – from soft painterly splashes to strong linework and graphic photo prints.  The range is available to buy through new Australian online store Inadesignerhome and also from Sixhands’ own website.  It could just be me, but I reckon they could do with a few more interstate retail stockists.  *hint hint*.

AMAZINGLY, all Sixhands textiles are designed and printed right here in Australia.  Mucho impressivo.

I’m gonna go out with an extravagant simile and say these prints really are just like the Australian version of Missoni!  Who’s with me!?

Lumiere Art + Co – Giveaway!

Lovely cushions and prints by Emma Cleine of Lumiere Art + Co!  Photo – Armelle Habib.

I have a sneaking suspicion that they slip some kind of creative potion into the waters of the Mornington Peninsula. From the lands of Sarah Dingwall, Goldnbrown, Claire Wayman, and Codename Tom; TDF presents newcomer Lumiere Art + Co!

This super stunning range of prints and homewares is the work of one talented lady, Emma Cleine.  Emma is trained in printmaking and sculpture – her cushions and artworks are printed by press, rather than screen, which ensures each item is unique.  Her current print series is named ‘Mandala’, and depicts layered vintage lace circles printed on Russian linen. So simple, but seriously gorgeous – and somehow calming, like the sacred circle which inspired them.  Plus, who could say no to a touch of pom pom fringing!

Lumiere Art + Co may be a young enterprise, but Emma has a seriously impressive list of stockists. Melbourne trendsetters Husk, Fenton & Fenton, and Turner and Lane have recognised Emma’s beautiful work – now that’s a truly discerning bunch of Melbourne retailers!  Mornington readers can also find Emma’s work at Page 8 and White Nest (I cannot find links for these – correct me if I’m wrong!).  Small cushions (45cm x 45cm) retail for $132, and large (60cm x 60cm) for $165. Emma’s prints are also now available online at Otomy’s Arthouse.

Emma has been super generous and offered a giveaway of her beautiful ‘Sailors Knot’ print for TDF readers, which retails for $300 unframed (76 x 56 cm). To be in the running, pop a comment on this post before 10.00pm this evening. The winner will be notified by email tomorrow!

*UPDATE – Congratulations to Helen (comment #243) whose name was drawn at random and has won the Lumiere Art + Co ‘Sailors Knot’ print. Thank you to everyone who left a comment and extra special thanks to Emma for this generous prize!

You may remember the very gorgeous home of actress Jane Hall, blogged here a few months ago.  You may also recall from that post that after moving on from her role in Neighbours earlier this year, Jane launched an inspired and very hands-on little interior design and styling service called Salvation Jane!

What I love most about Jane’s approach is that it’s not about making big expensive changes – it’s a service that bridges the gap between high-end interior design and personal home styling consultation.  Jane is all about making your home look the best it can, without ditching all your old stuff!  For a modest fee she will come to your place and brainstorm what you can do to re-invigorate your home with nothing more than a little imagination and elbow grease! OH and a good splash of colour!

BUT it doesn’t stop there.  Jane has also spent the best part of this year designing her very own product range – and it just launched this week!  The Salvation Jane Home range features bedlinen, floor cushions and scatter cushions in great vibrant colours, designed by Jane and hand printed right here in Melbourne.  Big congratulations Jane!

I asked Jane about this recent move from acting into the world of interiors and product design… here’s what she had to say -

“I have been acting professionally for the better part of thirty years, and it is a career I find immensely fulfilling.  However, the work is sporadic, and often not child friendly, and I have long had a strong desire to have a little more control over my working life.

Creating a business that I was solely responsible for has satisfied my desire for autonomy and been creatively rewarding.  I’ve always been really into design, having regrettably never completed my Fashion degree at RMIT, I’ve been desperate to design stuff, and homewares it is!   My parents are very creative and passed on a strong work ethic, and I’ve never been scared of a challenge, which ‘Salvation Jane Home’ certainly is!”

I love Jane’s brave cheerful colours – those cross floor cushions are such a winner! ALSO I must say you have just gotta admire Jane’s incredible energy and determination… do show your support with a little visit to her online shop!

Yeah.  She’s totally gorgeous too. :)

Swiden Designs

New things from Melbourne-based homewares label Swiden Designs (buy online here)

Charlotte Swiden is a Swedish born designer living in Melbourne, who launched her homewares label Swiden Designs just under a year ago.  She is based in Collingwood, and evens shares a studio with some other designers I half know, so GOD KNOWS why I haven’t come across her work until now.  Doh.  Sorry Charlotte!  Better late than never!

Charlotte’s latest collection TIVOLIVAT is pictured above – ain’t it the cutest!?  Inspired by funfair rides, fairy floss & ferris wheels, TIVOLIVAT is a play on words in Swedish. TIVOLI is another word for fun park, and LIVAT means exhilarating or lively.  Aww.  I guess you can take the Swede out of Scandinavia, but it seems you can’t take the Scandi cuteness out of her work!

Beautiful smile-inducing stuff!

New Guest Blogger – Globe-trotting textile designer, Gemma Cagnacci of Line x Shape x Colour !

Textile Designer Gemma Cagnacci of Line x Shape x Colour joins the Guest Blog this week, sharing highlights of her incredible recent round-the-world trip!

So I know I am prone to exaggeration at the best of times, but I really cannot think of a way to accurately introduce this week’s guest blogger without launching into a tirade of superlatives.  Seriously.  We are SO lucky to have Gemma Cagnacci of Line x Shape x Colour with us all week, sharing highlights of her incredible recent globe-trotting adventure!

OK here come the superlatives.  Line x Shape x Colour is the absolute BEST travel blog I’ve ever seen.  Actually it’s one of the very best Australian blogs you will ever lay eyes on, full stop.   Over the last year, Gemma, a Sydney-based textile designer, has used her blog to document the most amazing round-the-world trip.  She and her partner Andrew have just spent the best part of 2011 travelling through the Middle East and Central Asia, starting in Istanbul, meandering down to Cairo, and following the Silk Road  from Beijing to Tashkent, Uzbekistan.  The journey of a lifetime.

Luckily for the rest of us, Gemma has diligently documented every country, every city, every market, every monument, every cute kid and every postcard-perfect scene in eye-popping detail on her incredible blog.  Her shots are AMAZING.  It’s vicarious travel like you’ve never experienced before – you simply must visit and bookmark Line x Shape x Colour!

Now back in sunny Sydney, Gemma has generously agreed to share a week of highlights from her trip here on our Guest Blog!  AMAZING!  She’s distilled her epic journey into five dense, image-laden posts – we’ll share highlights of her time in Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Egypt and Turkey.

Good luck getting through this week without booking an airline ticket, that’s all I can say.

Massive thanks to Gemma for taking us along for the ride!

Double Denim

Dell Stewart has curated ‘Denim.‘,  an exhibition of the contemporary use of denim in art, craft and design.  Top left – ‘Golden Fleece 3′ by Renilde De Peuter.  Pillowcases top right are by UK artist Julie Floersch whose work sadly will miss the exhibition due to international shipping dramas! Agh disaster.  No matter… there is much other gorgeousness to see, and Julie’s work will still feature in the very special full colour catalogue Dell has created.  The fabulous denim bracelets are by Sydney based Lyn Balzer and Tony Perkins.

YES it’s two posts in one day… and perhaps more importantly, it’s TWO posts in one week about DENIM.

Talented Melbourne crafter / artist Dell Stewart has curated ‘Denim.‘,  an inspired exhibition of art, craft and design inspired by this most versatile and timeless of textiles.  Dell has selected an incredible line-up of both local and international makers… Melbourne creative Max Olijnyk of Note to Self is represented, as is craft queen Penelope Durston of Cottage Industry… and Sydney-based sisterly talent team Maricor / Maricar are also on board, along with a host of other insanely talented people.  The show opens tomorrow at Mr Kitly, Brunswick’s much loved quirky shop and exhibition space.  And the dress code for tomorrow night?  Double denim of course.

See you there!
