Bonnie & Neil new things

New things from Melbourne design duo Bonnie & Neil

I basically just love EVERYTHING that Melbourne design duo Bonnie & Neil ever make.  Seriously.  I see so many excellent homewares and textile designs these days but I’m not sure there is any other local design team who are this prolific and consistently awesome, and who truly outdo themselves with every new range – all whilst maintaining a commitment to local manufacturing and in-house production!  Totally impressive.

They just lauched this fabulous new collection of tableware and soft furnishings at Life in Style in Sydney last month and, not surprisingly, already have a few bazillion orders to fill!  SUCH inspired colour and pattern combos… a little dash of mexicana folk intertwined with geometric patterns, botanical prints that fabulous fluoro.   I adore pretty much everything.  I mean, rustic natural linen with mad neon pink splashes!?  Ah YES PLEASE.  So so good. (Looks like my love affair with neon pink it still going strong…)

Bonnie and Neil are heading OS very soon to find some international fans… Just quietly, I reckon they might hit the bigtime.  Get in while you can kids.

ps. Much of what you see here will hit retailers over the next four weeks – for your local stockist see here.

Baby Blankets by Sunday Ganim

Beautiful baby blankets by Sunday Ganim

As that friendly little button in our side bar suggests, this week we decided we’d have a bit of fun with KIDS WEEK - a week of content for the young and young at heart!

Why!?  Well, basically because there is so much seriously cute kids stuff being designed in Aus and NZ at the moment, and we don’t normally have much opportunity to cover it. With school holidays this week it seemed like an opportune time to get excited about all things little, and share a few of our favourite design finds for kids!

So we’re kicking things off today with an intro to one particularly clever local lass – say good morning to Sunday Ganim!

Sunday was fortunate to be born into a supremely creative family – as you might have guessed, she is the daughter of Melbourne textiles queen Rae Ganim, who we recently profiled here. Aside from blessing her daughter with the prettiest name (surely anyone called ‘Sunday’ is destined for celebrity?) Rae also instilled in Sunday a fascination with beautiful textiles, colour and pattern… and so I guess it wasn’t much of a surprise when Sunday launched her very own range of beautiful knitted baby blankets last year.

In actual fact Sunday arrived at this path in a rather round-about way.  After graduating from Media Arts at RMIT, and a brief stint working in the film industry as an art department assistant on various productions, Sunday was struck down by chronic fatigue. After a few years dedicated to recovery, Sunday took herself off to New York, where she interned with trend forecasting website stylesight.com, as well as with our fave NY crafters – Confetti System! (a pilgrimage for Melbourne creatives it seems!?).

Sunday’s time in NYC inspired her to pursue her own creative endeavours, and so upon her return to Melbourne, and inspired by the birth of her nephew Max in 2010, Sunday started her own business with this sweet range of locally made baby blankets.   This year Sunday also plans to launch a larger-sized range of throws and blankets for grown-up beds – I’ll keep you posted on that!

Sunday Ganim baby blankets are all made in Melbourne from the highest quality materials – the striped ones are Egyptian Cotton imported from Italy, and the patterned ones are 100% Australian merino wool.  They’re soft as soft can be, and such delectable colour combinations (I love the grey and yellow!).  The perfect wrapping for the most precious present!

You can buy Sunday’s blankets from her online shop and from Ganim’s Store in Fitzroy, Melbourne – as well as bunch of other lovely stockists listed here.

Stay tuned because TOMORROW we have a rather fabulous giveaway in store, which will include one of Sunday’s beautiful striped cotton baby blankets – make sure you pop back tomorrow to enter!

Thankyou Sunday we think you are awesome :)

Sydney Home – Sally Campbell

Today’s stunning Sydney home is one I’ve been chasing for quite some time – the creative couple who live here, Sally Campbell and her husband Greg will certainly attest to that!   I must shamefully admit I’ve been badgering them (not relentlessly, mind you – off and on!) for almost 2 years… but this busy pair spend so much of their year travelling due to Sally’s incredible business, and so it wasn’t until last month that the opportunity finally presented itself to shoot their beautiful home.  Wowsers!  Luckily, it was totally worth the wait!

As I am sure many of you know, Sally is an amazing textile designer responsible for the most vibrant, beautiful quilts and soft furnishings, created under the name Sally Campbell Handmade Textiles.  In fact Sally was one of the very first people I ever interviewed on this site.  I’ve admired her work for a very long time, especially because like me, Sally is an escapee of the film industry!  (ha ha just kidding, kind of).  After 25 years working as a set and costume designer, Sally’s passion for beautiful textiles eventually inspired her to produce her own collection of soft furnishings – she launched her business in 2005, and hasn’t looked back.

Sally and Greg have lived in their beautiful and rather massive Victorian home in Sydney’s Randwick for 10 years.   The best way I can think to describe their very special home, is to say that it somehow has that luscious-but-lived-in feel, normally reserved for the homes of fictional film characters!  It’s unpretentious and ‘real’, even though it’s grand and busy and a little overwhelming!  Since being here they’ve updated only small sections – the bathrooms, pantry and laundry have been re-worked, and Sally has created a beautiful lush courtyard garden at the rear of the home, which spills glossy foliage across every window and doorway.  It is SO heavenly.

Of course the home has very impressive bones; generous rooms, high ceilings and Victorian fixtures, such as the marble fireplaces in almost every room – one of Sally’s favourite features.  But the real specialness here is in the eclectic details, and the stories this space tells about Sally and Greg and their creative friends and family.  Sally and Greg travel to India every year,  and as you can see, their home is filled with souvenirs from their travels.  Sally’s sister Cressida Campbell is a BRILLIANT (and very famous!) artist – her work is dotted around the house, and in turn, this eclectic home has been the subject of many of her incredible paintings.  (TRULY amazing work you must check it out!). Amongst her many treasures, Sally says Cressida’s paintings are her favourite possessions.

Massive thanks to Sally and Greg for generously sharing their home with us today!  If you love Sally’s home you will most certainly love her beautiful work – do check out her brand new website, blog and online store to see some of her pieces, and shots of her amazing travels in India.  I am especially in love with her new Frenchie-style lightweight cotton towels… you know the ones.  So posh.  Love love.  (Sally are those solid red/blue stripe ones in stock yet!? Keep me posted!).

Sixhands

Stunning soft furnishings and accessories by Sydney textile designers Sixhands

How outrageously fabulous are these textile designs by Sydney based creative trio Sixhands!?  I am wondering how on earth I did not know about them earlier. Aghhh I HATE when I am not first off the mark!  Ha ha.  No, seriously, I really hate it.

ANYWAY.  Better late than never!

First launched in 2006 by designers Alecia Jensen, Anna Harves and Brianna Pike, Sixhands originally found their calling specialising in printed textiles for the fashion industry. Their stunning work was quickly picked up by many of Australia’s best known fashion brands – including Sportsgirl, Alannah Hill, Wayne Cooper and Bianca Spender.

In recent years this talented team have turned their attention to an incredible in-house range of  soft furnishings and home accessories – including cushions, lampshades, rugs and wallpapers.   It is SUCH a truly stunning collection, and incorporates an immense variety of layered visual elements – from soft painterly splashes to strong linework and graphic photo prints.  The range is available to buy through new Australian online store Inadesignerhome and also from Sixhands’ own website.  It could just be me, but I reckon they could do with a few more interstate retail stockists.  *hint hint*.

AMAZINGLY, all Sixhands textiles are designed and printed right here in Australia.  Mucho impressivo.

I’m gonna go out with an extravagant simile and say these prints really are just like the Australian version of Missoni!  Who’s with me!?

Lumiere Art + Co – Giveaway!

I have a sneaking suspicion that they slip some kind of creative potion into the waters of the Mornington Peninsula. From the lands of Sarah Dingwall, Goldnbrown, Claire Wayman, and Codename Tom; TDF presents newcomer Lumiere Art + Co!

This super stunning range of prints and homewares is the work of one talented lady, Emma Cleine.  Emma is trained in printmaking and sculpture – her cushions and artworks are printed by press, rather than screen, which ensures each item is unique.  Her current print series is named ‘Mandala’, and depicts layered vintage lace circles printed on Russian linen. So simple, but seriously gorgeous – and somehow calming, like the sacred circle which inspired them.  Plus, who could say no to a touch of pom pom fringing!

Lumiere Art + Co may be a young enterprise, but Emma has a seriously impressive list of stockists. Melbourne trendsetters Husk, Fenton & Fenton, and Turner and Lane have recognised Emma’s beautiful work – now that’s a truly discerning bunch of Melbourne retailers!  Mornington readers can also find Emma’s work at Page 8 and White Nest (I cannot find links for these – correct me if I’m wrong!).  Small cushions (45cm x 45cm) retail for $132, and large (60cm x 60cm) for $165. Emma’s prints are also now available online at Otomy’s Arthouse.

Emma has been super generous and offered a giveaway of her beautiful ‘Sailors Knot’ print for TDF readers, which retails for $300 unframed (76 x 56 cm). To be in the running, pop a comment on this post before 10.00pm this evening. The winner will be notified by email tomorrow!

*UPDATE – Congratulations to Helen (comment #243) whose name was drawn at random and has won the Lumiere Art + Co ‘Sailors Knot’ print. Thank you to everyone who left a comment and extra special thanks to Emma for this generous prize!

You may remember the very gorgeous home of actress Jane Hall, blogged here a few months ago.  You may also recall from that post that after moving on from her role in Neighbours earlier this year, Jane launched an inspired and very hands-on little interior design and styling service called Salvation Jane!

What I love most about Jane’s approach is that it’s not about making big expensive changes – it’s a service that bridges the gap between high-end interior design and personal home styling consultation.  Jane is all about making your home look the best it can, without ditching all your old stuff!  For a modest fee she will come to your place and brainstorm what you can do to re-invigorate your home with nothing more than a little imagination and elbow grease! OH and a good splash of colour!

BUT it doesn’t stop there.  Jane has also spent the best part of this year designing her very own product range – and it just launched this week!  The Salvation Jane Home range features bedlinen, floor cushions and scatter cushions in great vibrant colours, designed by Jane and hand printed right here in Melbourne.  Big congratulations Jane!

I asked Jane about this recent move from acting into the world of interiors and product design… here’s what she had to say -

“I have been acting professionally for the better part of thirty years, and it is a career I find immensely fulfilling.  However, the work is sporadic, and often not child friendly, and I have long had a strong desire to have a little more control over my working life.

Creating a business that I was solely responsible for has satisfied my desire for autonomy and been creatively rewarding.  I’ve always been really into design, having regrettably never completed my Fashion degree at RMIT, I’ve been desperate to design stuff, and homewares it is!   My parents are very creative and passed on a strong work ethic, and I’ve never been scared of a challenge, which ‘Salvation Jane Home’ certainly is!”

I love Jane’s brave cheerful colours – those cross floor cushions are such a winner! ALSO I must say you have just gotta admire Jane’s incredible energy and determination… do show your support with a little visit to her online shop!

Yeah.  She’s totally gorgeous too. :)
