A Friend of Mine – Paper cut graphics

Graphic identity by Suzy Tuxen of A Friend of Mine, created for last year’s VCE ‘Season of Excellence’ event.

Must admit I’m very slow off the mark with this one, but it’s too beautiful not to share… wouldn’t you agree?

This beautiful paper project is by Melbourne-based graphic designer Suzy Tuxen of A Friend of Mine, and was created for last year’s VCE Season of Excellence event – a series of exhibitions staged by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA), to showcase the best creative work produced by VCE students in various fields.

A Friend Of Mine is usually a one-woman show, but for this ambitious project Suzy joined forces with friend and long-time collaborator Ryan Ward (of United Measures!) to create this striking campaign identity and associated print matter.  A series of hand-cut, layered dioramas were crafted for each field of study, each one framed within the silhouette of an arm, reflecting the hard work and enthusiasm evident in the students’ work.  Such a beautiful concept – not to mention razor-sharp execution!

That Ms. Tuxen really is making some amazing work!  More pics and other projects on her website.

Pop-Up Picks – Melbourne & Sydney

Gorgeous goodies from Tractor Home and Curio & Curio for their joint Pop-Up warehouse sale this week!  (Cushion top left is Curio & Curio, all other product – Tractor Home)

I think I may have to start a regular POP UP SHOP OF THE WEEK post.   A Pop-Up press release seems to find its way to my inbox every second day. I’m sure it wouldn’t be too much of stretch to find a different Pop-Up shop to promote 52 times a year.  Sheesh.  It’s positively exhausting.  Yet AWESOME :)

SO Today I have TWO new Pop-Up tip offs for you, one Melbourne and one Sydney.  Both are underway today and running all weekend!

Matthew Roland & Friends

Matthew Roland & Friends Pop-Up and workshops this weekend in Sydney

If you’re in SYDNEY this weekend, do not despair, there is some Pop-Up love for you too!

Matthew Roland Bannister is a young (and I mean PROPERLY young – like 20 years young!) designer with a penchant for PAPER engineering.  After exhibiting at the recent A4 Paper Festival which just wrapped up in Sydney, he is currently hosting his very own open studio / Pop-Up shop and paper craft workshops at Gaffa Gallery.  Over achiever alert!

The Pop Up looks super cuteness and I must say Mr Bannister seems so lovely and talented and passionate about his craft.  He is running two craft workshops this Saturday in conjunction with stupendously talented fellow paper crafter Bianca Chang.  All materials are provided for both workshops and tickets are just $30!  Outrageous.  Info and tickets here.

Much gorgeousness to be seen on both Matthew and Bianca‘s websites… do pop over and have a look!

Claire Nereim – new things

Claire Nereim’s limited edition print for the Australian-based online store Baker’s Dozen

DO you remember US graphic artist/illustrator Claire Nereim ? (I first blogged about her here and here) Love her work. So restrained, so clever and thoughtful.

Love her posters.
Love her illustrated calenders.
Love her experiments with type…

Type formed from a ribbon of cut paper featured in PAPER magazine.

Love love love.

Recently Claire designed an exclusive print for the Australian-based online store Baker’s Dozen, who invite artists and makers to create beautiful things in editions of 13.

ALSO Claire has printed a third edition of her stunning Seasonal Fruits ‘Forever Calender’ due to it’s overwhelming popularity! They’re available on Etsy – only 3 copies left!!

Perhaps you all already know about the incredible paper sculpture of Jen Stark…? She’s been all over the blogosphere in the last year or so. In fact, if you watch the funny little movie on her website, it says that design blogs have had a big part to play in her recent popularity and success. Yaaaay! Love that.

The video is quite good, if you can bear the cheesy voiceover. BUT a much better video is here. It’s documents a visit to Jen’s studio, and shows some incredible works in progress. Ms Stark seems sweet, shy and super clever.

Annette Ringrose’s ring o’ roses

Annette Ringrose’s gorgeous paper rose heart, hanging on display at the Food and Wine festival in Melbourne last week.

Melbourne-based props maker extraordinaire Annette Ringrose can make pretty much anything. Usually using not much more than polystyrene, cardboard and a gluegun. She often makes props for TV advertisements, private events and corporate functions… incredible things like oversized fruits, crazy costumes, table centrepieces and once she even made a giant engagement ring (for a very romantic wedding proposal). She also makes particularly great chocolate-chip cookies.

I have to share Annette’s gorgeous oversized paper rose hearts, made for a display at the Melbourne Food and Wine festival last week. She made around 36 huge paper roses, carefully cutting and curling and spray-painting each petal, before gluing them around a painted polystyrene ball, then attaching them all to large ply-wood hearts. Aren’t they gorgeous!?

Here Annette shares some photos of the rose-making process step by step! So clever. Thanks Annette!!

Annette also works at The Prop Store in Melbourne. Next time you need some amazing prop or oversized custom-made incredible thing for your corporate function / wedding / kid’s 21st / whatever – Annette’s your lady!

Step 1 – painting the polystyrene balls for the centre of each rose. Step 2 – cutting out each layer of petals.

Step 3 – more cutting and curling of petals. Step 4 – attaching petal layers to each polystyrene ball.

Step 5 – Attaching roses to heart templates.

Annette with her creation!
