NYC

DKNY sign disappears!

DKNY sign – before and after. Before shot by wallyg on flickr, after shot from Bowery Boogie.

Walking through Soho the other day we were totally shocked to see that the famous DKNY city-scape wall mural (cnr Broadway and Houston), which we had only been admiring days earlier – had been PAINTED OVER. In beige.

How sad. Although it was an advertisement of sorts, it was something of a New York icon. :(

Both these photos are from the Gothamist website (sorry I am on a plane and have no camera cable!!). Pre-beige photo originally from wallyg on flickr, post-beige photo from Bowery Boogie.

According to the flickr caption, the original mural apparently became recognised worldwide after it’s inclusion in the opening credits of NYPD Blue! In 2008, Abercrombie and Fitch signed a 20-year, $71-million lease to open a 40,000 square-foot store in the building, and DKNY lost the rights to use the wall. Boo.

Renegade Craft Fair!

Can you believe that the super famous Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn NYC was on this weekend whilst I am here!?? What amazing luck. I had no idea! I remember reading about Renegade years ago when I first started reading American craft and design blogs (my early favourites included my paper crane and boygirlparty!) It always seemed like such an awesome event! …and then I just happened to find myself reading a free ‘what’s on in Brooklyn’ magazine last week and RENEGADE jumped off the page – yaaaay!

Here are my highlights from the 2-day craft extravaganza! There was so much great stuff to see… and I even spotted a few craftsters whose blogs I am familiar with! (But was a little star-struck when I spotted Laura Normandin at her stall…! So I didn’t say hello :( Silly silly.) Anyway, it was just another reminder that the world is so small when you’re a blogger!

Must apologise to my poor fella who was so patient (but very bored!) whilst I oohed and ahhed over all the handmade goodies, made friends with lots of lovely craftsters and photographed to my heart’s content! Thanks Gord!

This stall belongs to talented creative duo Something’s Hiding in Here – Melbourne readers may recognise those fabulous hand carved moustaches from Penelope Durston‘s gorgeous shop – Cottage Industry in Fitzroy!? A brief chat with the stall holders revealed that Cottage Industry is their first international stockist! Good work Pene!

Something’s Hiding in Here have a gorgeous blog which you should totally bookmark. Also do you remember this gorgeous little project which also belongs to them? Super cute and super clever.

Illustrated paper goods by Anna Bond of Rifle Design

OMG. Totally obsessed with Anna Bond‘s beautiful detailed illustrations. She creates ridiculously cute custom-designed wedding invites and party favours, as well as beautiful little gift cards and recipe cards under the name Rifle Design… so gorgeous. See more below. AND you must visit her blog and website for more (bigger and better) images. TOTALLY GORGEOUS. Worth a click I promise.

Screenprinted posters by Jen Skelley and Nate Duval

I was really impressed with these beautiful hand-screenprinted posters by illustrators Jen Skelley and her partner Nate Duval… Aren’t they gorgeous? Beautiful colours… and such amazing variety. Such good value too. This really is affordable art! I was so tempted… but was a bit scared they might get squashed in my suitcase :(

Handmade ceramics by Brooklyn-based Perch Design

Handmade ceramics by Brooklyn-based Perch Design… who also apparently stock a shop in Western Australia!? Any other Australian retailers interested should get in touch! These pieces are beautiful… love the perforated tealight holders.

Handcrafted timber home accessories by Kindling

Timber home accessories by Kindling. Love the faceted shapes… and also the little birch picture / placecard holders. Cuteness.

More Etsy-love!

Bumped into the lovely Christina Batch-Lee again, manning the Etsy stall (so sorry didn’t catch her colleague’s name… whoops). They gave me a free tote bag! So lovely!

Beautiful delicate ceramics by Chicago-based artist Susan Dwyer (her label is called Up in the Air Somewhere). How gorgeous is their stand!? They went to a lot of effort! Susan’s website has much better shots of her beautiful work – be sure to check it out!

Behind the scenes at Etsy!

Etsy offices entrance and reception area. Do you not just love it!?? That owl in the entrance way is HUGE – like 2 metres high or more? Also I love that cute handmade Etsy sign above the reception desk! Adam introduced this guy as the ‘manceptionist’. ha! Most photos here by Glen Jackson Taylor of Core 77.

Oh YES that’s right! Last week I was lucky enough to visit the offices of Etsy.com! Agghhhh! Deep breaths. Too exciting! (I’m so very appreciative to Glen from Core 77 for hooking this up for me! Also all photos here are by Glen – thanks again!!)

Etsy are based in Brooklyn, and utilise an fantastic old industrial space which used to be the offices and factory of a printing press company. It seriously seems like the most fun place to work. It feels like some kind of kooky, fun-filled student-union office set up, characterised by the stunning original timber panelling (from the print company offices), beautiful persian rugs in every room, lots of plant life (especially tiny succulents!) in every workspace, and of course – handmade cuteness everywhere!

Did you know Etsy has grown astronomically since first created in June 2005 by a guy called Rob Kalin (aged 28 at the time if you don’t mind!)? Their merchant sales in the first year were around $166,000. Last year they were $87.5 MILLION! Can you believe this kind of revenue can be generated by handmade goods alone!? How awesome is that? However it is also super awesome to learn than Etsy are not some kind of massive corporate machine… behind the scenes Etsy’s personality as a workplace is very much in keeping with its online presence – quirky, DIY-driven and heaps of fun!

Our guided tour was conducted by the lovely Adam Brown from the Marketing team. After seeing that each Etsy staff member has their own cute customised labcoat(!!), I demanded Adam wore his for our tour – he charmingly obliged! You can see him below with colleague Christina Batch-Lee looking super gorgeous in their matching coats! Thanks so much for the tour guys!

Hallway, entrance way. Loving that wood panelling.

Top is the Engineers room. See the cute ‘we heart engineers’ sign?! These guys do the tricky tech stuff for the website. Here they are having a ‘stand-up’. Apparently this is quite common in NYC? It is a stand-up meeting – good because it forces everyone to look away from their computer screen at each other, and quick and to-the-point (because everyone is standing up!). I was intrigued. Goes to show I know nothing about working in an office!

Etsy blog offices! Ooooh to be a full-time blogger! Don’t you love the handmade sign on their door?

lunchroom / kitchen

Things that made us laugh in the entrance area.

Etsy Octopus. Every business should have one.

Cafe Gitane

Cafe Gitane exterior / interior. Love the colourful lino floor! Wonder if that’s original…

Discovered Cafe Gitane in Nolita yesterday… too lovely for words. So bright and cheery and friendly and no fuss. Instant favourite.

Beautiful food too, with a vaguely French/Moroccan-inspired menu. Cafe Gitane understand that a sandwich doesn’t necessarily taste better the more you put in it (unlike Manhattan institution Katz’s Deli – which I chickened out on today after seeing the meat:bread ratio of their sandwiches. It was a little scary.) Anyway, Cafe Gitane served me the most truly delicious toasted baguette with prosciutto. So simple and so utterly perfect.

Oh and it’s very reasonably priced also. I think we’re going back tomorrow ;)

Iced mint tea with sugar syrup on the side, baguette with prosciutto, fresh fruit salad – and Gord had baked eggs with a coffee , served with a tiny belgian chocolate on the side.

NYC Green

top – protected garden nestled between two tall buildings in the East Village (I think?), bottom – cascading planter outside a shop in Nolita.

Fort Greene, Brooklyn at dusk. LOVE the beautiful Brownstone buildings and leafy trees lining every street in this beautiful pocket of Brooklyn.

Did you know in New York City in the Springtime, there is lush, green foliage absolutely everywhere? Who would’ve thought a big dusty city like this would be so full of beautiful plant life… creeping for metres up building facades and spilling from so many windowsills?

Everyone seems to make a real effort to maintain their mini-gardens on window-ledges, and entrance ‘stoops’(?) – and it seems volunteers even pitch in at various community gardens on vacant blocks all over town.

Immaculate window boxes in the Upper East Side. Love those white / green hydrangeas especially.

Upper East Side – ivy-covered building and Japanese maple.

NYC – first impressions

Didn’t actually go inside (yet) but MAN I am so excited to visit the New Museum of Contemporary Art, designed by Japanese architects SANAA. It’s on Bowery, right near where we’re staying. AAgghhh. It is so beautiful. My photos and the dodgy photo-stitch effort just don’t do it justice. Better shots here.

dodgy photo-stitch. Sorry.

Just walking around in the sun. The bottom shot is right near where we’re staying in the East Village. What is it that makes those NY fire escapes so beautiful to look at? They shouldn’t be beautiful but they are.

Oh it appears I have already fallen behind here! Whoops. How neglectful. New York City is a busy and distracting place! However I am making the most of my jetlag… been wide awake since 3.00am, so figured I might as well be blogging :)

We spent day 1 wandering around the East Village and Soho, walking around in a total daze… There is so much of everything. Seriously – you go to buy a bagel and an orange juice and there’s, like, 48 different bagel flavours and 18 different orange juices! Not kidding! Decision-making is quite an effort in New York City! Anyway there is too much to filter… but will try to summarise my first impressions -

Jonathan Adler store in Soho – Super-cute, super colourful and super kitsch homewares and furniture. Bit twee and over-decorative for me, but that’s their schtick I guess. Still, gorgeous little space with lots of eye candy and pieces ot make you smile! The sales girls were also the friendliest in the whole of Soho!

Droog NYC
– High-concept just hit a new level. Amazing space – see shots below. I don’t know what was actually for sale, it was more like a museum of kooky pieces… no price tags in sight. Super snobbish staff, so taking photos was pretty terrifying… hence most of the shots here are from the Droog website.

Loved Droog’s flat-pack furniture… cute also how they’re displayed the pieces alongside the flat-pack sheets.

Crate and Barrel and CB2 (Crate and Barrel’s more contemporary offshoot?) – not so inspiring. Kind of Freedom-furniture meets Ikea? I was a bit disappointed. :(

Bloomingdales – Awesomeness. Bought some sunnies. Marc by Marc Jacobs for US$98. !! that seems cheap to me..? Good things on sale – up to 40% off! Great for menswear actually. Makes you realise how lacking good menswear is in Melbourne! Gord had his eye on the Helmut Lang and APC jeans…

Design Within Reach – Eames and lots more licensed twentieth century stuff. Gorgeous showroom, nice staff (there was lots of snobbishness in Soho so anyone who smiled at me gets a mention!). I don’t quite get the ‘within reach’ thing though. Is that supposed to mean it’s affordable? It seemed pretty swish to me. Confused.

Taschen bookshop Soho – brillant. SO cheap, so good. How do they do it? Gorgeous design books starting at US$15.00. And that’s not even a sale price! I fell in love with New New York Interiors. Why are books so big and heavy?

APC – everyone said to go here, and Gord swear by APC jeans so we had to visit. But… must say… I don’t quite get it! Don’t get me wrong – it’s a gorgeous loft-like space, characterised by wide rustic floorboards… (so rustic and uneven, in fact, that they were quite a tripping hazard!). Amidst all the other Soho retail offerings, APC definitely stood out for its stylish yet restrained feel and classic, super-simple fit-out. But… the clothes…. so young and girly and floral…! I don’t know.. they didn’t grab me.

APC shop. Love those rustic floorboards! Shots from here.

Does this look like a film-set of what? The sun hitting the cobble stones… the huge floor to ceiling windows in this shopfront. I love New York windows! That truck on the left with the steam coming out it’s exhaust looks totally staged. Then on the right some dude is sitting on a chair on the ‘sidewalk’ just working on his laptop…?

I think this is the sales office for the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) / Rem Koolhaas’ ambitious development at 23 East 22nd st. I just liked the Neon signs, really. Also the proposed tower they’re designing is pretty cool too… see below. (Shots from ArchDaily, more info there.)
