Melbourne Home – Georgia Danos

Bottom left – one of two bronze dancers, gifts from Georgia’s grandparents when she first moved out of home. ‘I am the very lucky fourth generation to enjoy them – just looking after them for the next generation!’ she says.  Bottom right – painting by Matthew Johnson, a gift from Georgia’s girlfriends for her wedding. ‘I adore the colours and it reminds me of how special and beautiful my girls are!’ says Georgia. I particularly love the colour of the Barcelona chair, such a classic timeless design.’ – Georgia.  All photos –  Sean Fennessy.

Ooh la la this one is a doozy.   A mid-century masterpiece in Toorak, designed by none other than architect Roy Grounds of NGV fame!  The home received many accolades when first built in the early 1950′s, and won the Victorian Architecture Medal in 1954.  A classic, quintessentially Melbourne home.  Actually, it feels a little like a teeny tiny version of the NGV, minus the stained glass ceiling.  And waterwall :)

The lucky couple who call this amazing space home are Georgia Danos and husband Julian, who purchased the house nearly 5 years ago.  Georgia and Julian were lucky to move in not long after the home had been meticulously restored by the previous owners.  The house is heritage listed, and still retains the majority of its original features – I get the feeling this home has been very well loved by every generation who has lived here!

What is amazing about this home is the incredible level of detail specified by Roy Grounds when he designed the home nearly 60 year ago.  It borders on control-freaky!  I say this because so much of the furniture is fixed – the cabinetry, the circular dining table, even the master bed and bedsides are all built-in, perfectly placed in symmetry with that incredible internal courtyard, never to be meddled with by any future residents!   Not that you’d want to mess with this uncompromising architectural vision – Georgia says ‘It’s so superbly designed that the sun literally wakes you streaming onto the pillows in the morning!   The detailing is so considered yet so simple.’

It’s clear from just a brief chat with Georgia that she is truly passionate about the  mid-century detailing and historical significance of her home.  She gushes enthusiastically about the unique atmosphere of the space – ‘The circular courtyard is incredible – this aspect is felt from every room, as is the beautiful outlook onto lush bamboo, amazing how it grows!  The timber panelling on the ceiling and walls is a unique feature of the house.  I feel so lucky to live in this little oasis.  There is such a sense of serenity and peacefulness about the space.’

In furnishing her home, Georgia has been careful to work with the existing elements and keep the interior styling classic and understated. A mix of vintage and new artwork and furnishings ensure the home feels contemporary whilst maintaining a respectful nod to the past.  Two original Barcelona chairs in stunning tan leather look like they might have belonged to Roy himself!  The Matthew Johnson painting is a treasured possession – a wedding gift from Georgia’s best girlfriends, whilst the precious bronze dancers are family heirlooms from Hungary. ‘They have been handed down for 4 generations and remind me of my family’s history’ says Georgia.

Georgia is one stylish lass, and for that reason we just had to include the pretty portrait of her below.  Mainly because her outfit is sensational AND somehow it kind of matches the beautiful warm tones of the house!  I aspire to look this glamourous in everyday life.  But don’t be too impressed – Georgia is co-owner of the very gorgeous Grace boutique in nearby Hawksburn village… so everyday glamour goes with the job!

Massive thanks to Georgia for sharing her stunning home with us today!  She’d also like to thank Fleur McHarg for the beautiful flowers dotted throughout the house.

Blairgowrie Home – Andy Brown and family

The beautiful beachy Blairgowrie home of Andy Brown and family.  All photos – Lucy Feagins.

Front door / entrance.  Such beautiful greenery through every window!

Kitchen – and a sneak peek at Andy’s new product range – Goldnbrown cushions in the foreground!  Rug in kitchen by Armadillo & Co.

I had the great pleasure recently of meeting two incredibly lovely, bubbly, and inspiring Melbourne ladies – Andy Brown and Sass Goldsworthy, who have joined forces to launch new beach and homewares brand Goldnbrown.  As two busy working Mums, both living on the Mornington Peninsula, Andy and Sass really have poured such incredible energy and passion into their fledgling business!   It was so lovely to hear this dynamic duo excitedly discuss their new project – that buzz is infectious, I tell ya!

Anyway, after meeting Andy and Sass and checking out at their gorgeous product range, I was convinced one of these stylish local ladies must have a beautiful creative home.  I found myself coaxing Andy B into a home tour just a week after our initial meeting… and I am so glad I did!  Just LOOK at this stunning space! Andy describes it as ‘a beach house in the tree tops’ – a real aussie bush meets tropical vibe!

Amazingly, Andy and husband Stephen and little Charlie (2 years old) have been here only a YEAR!  I know, I know.  Depressing isn’t it?  How do people achieve this level of domestic bliss in just one year!?  (and whilst launching a new business!? )  Well, just quietly, I am getting the distinct impression that Andy a bit of an overachiever.  She has squeezed SO much in to the last few years!

After 5 years living and working in Bali, Indonesia, Andy and Stephen returned to Melbourne a year ago with little Charlie in tow, and all guns firing!  They were intent on creating a little beach oasis of their own here in Melbourne.  I must say they’ve certainly succeeded – this beautiful family home, flanked by lush foliage on all sides, really does have that incredible sense of calm you feel on a beach holiday.  It’s the perfect nest for a couple who’ve spent many years living and working in Indonesia (This place really does feel a little bit like Bali in Blairgowrie!).

Andy and Stephen were lucky to inherit a functional yet beautifully designed beach house with great bones – soaring ceilings, windows overlooking the garden in every room and lots of natural light.  ’Because we are surrounded by trees, we wanted to lighten up the inside of the house to really highlight the foliage and views to the garden’ says Andy.  ’We basically removed the 70′s ‘orange feel’ by lime washing the floor boards and painting the inside ‘antique white’ (including the kitchen cupboards)’ she explains.  The pair are also planning on extending the 3 bedroom house this winter to accommodate weekend visitors and a new addition to the family!

Andy says without hesitation her favourite aspect of the home is  being up in the tree tops.   ‘It feels amazing in Summer but even better in Winter… and given I’m currently working from home with Goldnbrown, I get to really enjoy all aspects of the day’.

Of course the location ain’t bad either!  The home is just metres from the beach – Andy says ‘we love the beach and the wine region (Red / Hill Main Ridge) closeby – we feel like we are luckiest people in the world to live here and raise Charlie in such a special & calm place’.  Couldn’t have said it better myself.  A beautiful home for a beautiful, busy family!

Massive thanks to Andy for her generosity and for sharing her beautiful home with us today, and to Sass for a delicious lunch during my visit!

PS.  You’ll learn a little more about Goldnbrown TOMORROW, when we will launch a very special beach-inspired Australia Day giveaway !

Melbourne Home – Heather Nette King and Family

The Armadale home of interiors stylist Heather Nette King and family

Vintage poster from  Vintage Posters on High Street Armadale.  Love that FAB pink bentwood bench… pink and green, what a combo.

Master bedroom – the painting was Heather’s Christmas gift from Jem and the girls – ‘after I layed on the hints with a trowel’ says Heather! It’s called ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ and is by the gorgeous Melbourne artist Arite Kannavos through Gilligan Grant Gallery.  Pillowcases from Scarlet Jones.

Today we present a vibrant Victorian family home in Armadale – full of life, colour, and, well – PINK!

Yes, it’s no secret that Heather Nette King, respected local interiors stylist (we interviewed Heather last year) has a thing for bold, sometimes quirky colour combos – and a particular love of pinky, girly hues! Heather lives here with husband Jeremy and daughters Annebelle (14) and Alex (12) – it seems with three ladies in the house, Jeremy is a little outnumbered!

After buying the house in 2000, Heather and Jeremy undertook just a few minor tasks to pretty up their new home without breaking the bank – they ripped up the carpet, polished the floorboards, painted the walls and installed wardrobes. The pool is a more recent addition – the family spent four years in Sydney from 2005 – 2009, and Jeremy, a little sad to come home, was compelled to install a pool upon their return to Melbourne!

Inevitably Heather’s work means she is constantly stumbling across new ideas for their ever-changing home… she re-paints the kitchen floor regularly (it’s deep pink at the moment), and props acquired from shoots and creative friends are always on rotation throughout the house. Annebelle’s room was painted with amazing wide horizontal stripes for a Dulux shoot last year – they had planned to re-paint the wall white, but of course Annebelle loved the stripes, so they stayed!  Gotta love that sense of spontenaity – such is the nature of a stylist’s home!

When asked what she loves most about her home, Heather says she has a soft spot for the ‘kookiness’ of the house – ‘it’s on an odd shaped block and the layout is a bit rabbit-warren-y, but it has a very relaxed, almost country-like feeling to it’ she says. The return verandah around the front and side of the house is another favourite feature.

Massive thanks to Heather for sharing her beautiful home with us and for the super speedy turnaround! Do pop over and check out Heather’s gorgeous blog if you haven’t got it bookmarked already, and you can also spot Heather’s fab house / product shoots most weekends in The Age’s Sunday Life and M Magazine!

Melbourne Home – Edwina Glenn and Family

The lovingly restored art deco apartment of Melbourne architects Edwina and Eddie Glenn.  Gio Ponti ‘Dezza’ armchair designed in 1965. Uh Oh.  I am very conscious it’s only WEEK TWO of 2012, and I fear we may be setting the bench a bit high with today’s seriously stunning Melbourne Home!

This beautiful two bedroom deco apartment in South Yarra has been lovingly restored and decorated by owners Edwina and Eddie Glenn.  I am sure it’ll come as no surprise to learn Edwina is an interior architect and Eddie an architect!  This talented pair have done such an exquisite job of re-working and styling their home with such elegance and restraint – the space has an instant sense of calm and radiance about it.  Love love love it.

Edwina says she and Eddie have lived in the apartment on and off for the past four years whilst renovating in stages. When they acquired the apartment, most period features had sadly been butchered over time with layers of reproduction joinery and paintwork.  The original fireplace had also been demolished and replaced with decorative cement sheeting.

Edwina and Eddie pared everything back and remodelled the fireplace to give it that beautiful curve that instantly references the art deco era. They also replaced the kitchen, restored the bathroom, floors and the doors.  The results speak for themselves! The restored elements blend seamlessly into the space (you’d never guess the fireplace wasn’t original!), whilst the contemporary joinery in the kitchen sits perfectly alongside the original detailing, like those amazing original windowframes!

There’s a lot to love about this space, but Edwina does have a few favourite features!  Sitting at the very top and rear of a stunning deco building, the apartment is incredibly private and has leafy views from every window, floating in the treetops with light on all sides – ‘it gives the apartment a very different quality of light and mood every time you arrive home’ says Edwina.  She says the West-facing view from the master bedroom is her favourite – ‘we love waking up in the morning and opening the blinds to reveal the windows looking West up the natural amphitheatre to the mature trees and old rooftops of South Yarra Hill’.

Edwina also loves the neighbourhood – of course The Royal Botanic Gardens are walking distance (perfect for an early morning stroll with 9-week old Jack), and Edwina says the higher density living in South Yarra tends to encourage people into the streets and shared spaces, which creates a great atmosphere.

Whilst they feel great affection for their serene South Yarra sanctuary, with gorgeous new bub Jack having arrived just recently, Edwina and Eddie are excited to be moving shortly to begin a new project – a dilapidated 1940’s house in South Melbourne.

Massive thanks to Edwina and Eddie for sharing their beautiful home!  A little about this talented pair – Edwina previously worked for Margie Bromilow of MBA Design Group, but with Jack’s recent arrival she’s currently working for herself (website here).  Eddie works with architectural firm Allan Powell (aghhh even more stunning residential eye candy to admire on the Allan Powell website too!).

Melbourne Home – Jessica Tremp

The Footrscray home of Jessica Tremp and partner Michael Madden.  Above – dining area, filled with rustic vintage furniture and op shop gold.  ’The table we bought as a wedding gift for ourselves’ says Jess. ‘Something to share stories over, stain with wine and spill memories onto’.  All photos – Sean Fennessy.

Another favourite painting hangs above the bookcase in the loungeroom – Jess says ‘I bought this pretty woman painting for myself on a day I was feeling blue. She makes me feel looked after.’  All photos - Sean Fennessy.

HAPPY Wednesday all!  Aren’t you glad to see that Australian Homes are BACK!?  Thank goodness for that.  Imagine a Wednesday without a gorgeous new Australian home to drool over.  How sad that would be :)

ANYHOO we’re kicking things off this week with what I would consider a typically kooky, eclectic, op-shop fabulous Melbourne home!  This sweet pad in Footscray belongs to photographic artist Jessica Tremp and her musician hubbie Michael Madden.  They live here with their distinguished dog Soda, an ex-racing greyhound (who is adorable but much less energetic that you might imagine a greyhound to be).

This creative couple have been here only 6 months, but have already put their stamp on their new surrounds.  They’re renting, but nevertheless have made a concerted effort to spruce up their new place, even re-painting the whole interior. They’re still getting used to their new neighbourhood after moving from the Northside, but are loving the generous proportions of their new home, with it’s high ceilings, large rooms and huge green backyard (with trampoline!).  Jess says ‘I love that I always feel relieved when I walk through the front door, it’s a space that allows for being creative in’.  Michael says his favourite thing about the home is that Jess is in it.  Awwww!

Massive thanks to Jess and Michael for sharing their home with us – do share the love by taking a moment to check out Jessica’s beautiful photographic work.  Her fine art photographs are here.  Her commercial stuff is here.  Much gorgeousness to discover.

Top 5 Australian Homes re-visited – Adriane Strampp’s rustic loft

The Collingwood home of artist Adriane Strampp.  The painting behind the couch is by Adriane.  All photos by the amazing Sean Fennessy.

Adriane’s much-loved ‘AGA’ stove!  All photos – Sean Fennessy.

Kitchen details

I know it’s not really cool to play favourites, but just quietly, the magical loft apartment of Melbourne artist Adriane Strampp really did take my breath away when we visited this unique home back in August this year.  It’s definitely one of my favourite Australian homes ever.  Truly. Probably because it is just so unique – so far removed from any other homes encountered on my relentless house hunting mission!

A visit to this perfectly styled industrial home immediately seems to transport you to another time and another world – huddled around the incredible AGA stove on a wintery night, you feel could be in wartime London, or the French countryside, or perhaps even some rustic bohemian Baz Luhrmann-esque Parisian loft!?

As outlined in the original post, whilst it’s cosy and full of character now, when Adriane first purchased this warehouse shell ten years ago, it was completely empty.  Unbelievable!  It seems impossible to picture this home, now layered with history  and eclectic details, as a blank canvas!   The space certainly has a a sense of history and worldliness that belies the ten years Adriane and daughter Lucy have lived here.

Adriane works from a wonderful light-filled studio in Fitzroy, just a short walk from her home (pics of her workspace can be seen in our original post).  She runs popular painting classes here on Monday nights and Tuesday mornings – more info here!  Adriane is also working towards a solo exhibition in Sydney at King St Gallery on William in March 2012.

Do re-visit the original post for many more pics of this truly unique Melbourne home!
