I went for a little daytrip to Kyneton recently and I must say although it is teeny tiny there are some seriously gorgeous places and talented people squirrelled away up there!  Quite a few creative Melburnians seems to be moving out this way in search of a tree change and more relaxed way of life – I think they might be on to something!  If you’re in Melbourne, I definitely recommend a little daytrip… only an hour and a half from the city, it really does feel a million miles away.

One clever Kyneton local is Vanessa Partridge, who left a career in PR in Melbourne to move here four years ago, and has since established her wonderful floristry business, Prunella, with business partner Caris Haughan.  Vanessa lives in this beautiful Victorian farmhouse with her new husband (of two weeks! – congrats!) Richard, their two cats Oscar and Little Kitty.

The move to Kyneton wasn’t such a big decision for Vanessa and Richard.  Whilst living in St Kilda, the pair visited Kyneton one weekend to meet friends for lunch at much-loved local eatery Annie Smithers, and the seed was sown. ‘We thought Kyneton was a wonderful town – our home was the very first house we looked at!’ recalls Vanessa.

After falling in love with their pretty weatherboard at first sight (and ignoring the warnings of their ‘sensible’ parents!), the pair soon discovered a few surprises in the weeks after moving in.  ’The white washed floors were painted around the furniture, kitchen cupboard doors swung precariously from their hinges and the rangehood circulated cooking odours back into the kitchen’ recalls Vanessa.  Architraves needed replacing, the bathroom tiling was only half finished, and house also needed completely re-wiring.  This in addition to particularly unfortunate interior colour treatment that required immediate attention – pistachio green and rose pink, with ‘country’ stencils lining the walls in each room!

After a minor clean-up and paint job, Vanessa and Richard approached their friend, talented interior designer Chelsea Hing, and a major renovation was planned.  ’Chelsea helped us work out how we could best utilise the space – we had a good idea of what we wanted to do, but she really helped us by looking at ideas we hadn’t considered and ensuring everything we did was functional’ says Vanessa.

All in all, the kitchen was moved, walls were knocked out to open up the space and centralise the fireplace in the main living area, and Chelsea also designed a few genius storage solutions for the kitchen and pantry space.   During the build, Vanessa and Richard threw a spanner in the works by falling in love with a stunning bath from amazing local company Boyd Alternatives.  I must admit it is SERIOUSLY beautiful!  Of course, it didn’t fit into the bathroom, so it was decided this would need to go into the bedroom, to take advantage of the lovely view out the bay window.  GENIUS!  Of course it’s now become a major focal point of the house.

Favourite features of the home for Vanessa include that incredible bath, plus artworks from many dear friends – talented artists including Miranda Skoczek, Peter Cole, Helen Cole, Oliver Cole, Lucy James, John LloydTony Flint. Vanessa is also very fond of ‘Fritz the deer’ and ‘Jeff the goose’, who she met at excellent Kyneton vintage store Kabinett!

But whilst it certainly is pretty as a picture, it’s not just the sweet styling that makes this home special – Vanessa says it’s the ‘feeling’ of this home that she was first drawn to, and that she still loves the most.  ’Our home feels warm and friendly like a hug, and now we have a kitchen, the smell of Richard making something yummy for dinner in his new kitchen is my favourite thing!’ Awww.  So romantic. Newly-weds. Love it! :)

If you love Vanessa’s home you will most certainly also love her beautiful shop Prunella on Piper st, Kyneton. I will feature this and a few other Kyneton shops here very soon!  In the meantime do pop by and visit the Prunella website.  In addition to their floral creations and styling services, Vanessa and Caris run fabulous seasonal events and floral workshops – make sure you signup to the mailing list to stay in the loop!

Massive thanks to Vanessa for sharing her beautiful home with us today, Chelsea Hing and Anne-Claire at CHDC for the tip off and for supplying many of these photographs, and Marni Kornhauser for her assistance during the shoot.

Castlemaine Home – Luke Mortimer (+ accommodation giveaway!)

The stunning new Castlemaine home of stylist / visual merchandiser Luke Mortimer.  All shots by Lucy Feagins.

Kitchen details – vintage pendant lights and salvaged industrial details

When I first saw a few pics of Luke Mortimer’s stunning new home in Chewton, just outside of Castlemaine in regional Victoria, it was a definitely a ‘HOLD EVERYTHING’ moment.  Followed by an immediate email something along the lines of ‘LUKE!  I will come to Castlemaine and shoot your house NEXT WEEK if you let me blog it!’ Ha ha.  Lucky for us, Luke graciously agreed to my demands (!!)… and I must say this has got to be one of my favourite Australian homes!

Though originally based in Melbourne (where he works as a stylist and visual merchandiser for Country Road), Luke was inspired to build his dream home in Chewton ‘to escape the city, and get back to basics – with a few modern luxuries of course!’.  He says also he just couldn’t afford to build the home he really wanted to in the city, so, with a relatively easy commute on the train, he decided to make the move to regional Victoria.

Luke found the block in Chewton on a drive out one day (with his Mum!) after missing out on another dream block.  ‘The trees were covered in blossom, and the sky was blue and the ground was soft and mushy…..’ he says… ‘it was love at first sight… or second site, as it were!’  Luke purchased the block in December 2009, and after many delays (ain’t it always the way?), building commenced in August 2010.  The build took just over 6 months – finishing in March this year.  Luke has documented the build process in brilliant detail on his excellent blog – well worth a voyeuristic stick beak!

When considering the design of his home, Luke says he really wanted to build a house that would sit comfortably in the existing landscape and not feel out of place.  ‘I wanted something nostalgic and modern at the same time – the house was designed to feel like an old Victorian weatherboard’ Luke says.  But the charm of this home isn’t limited only to the impressive architecture – Luke’s expert styling and attention to detail is what makes this space truly special.  What is particularly impressive, is that this generous two bedroom, two bathroom house has been almost completely furnished with hard rubbish finds, op shop bargains and eBay scores (oh, and a fair bit of Country Road bedlinen!).  Luke has spent the best part of two years relentlessly salvaging vintage finds and fossicking through op shops and online auctions to furnish his home.  Some would call it an obsession!  Even the bathroom basins and bath were vintage finds – picked up for a steal.  Luke says this is one of his favourite aspects of the home – ‘it gives me a huge sense of satisfaction to know that there are so many recycled pieces in the house.’

Luke divides his time between this country property and a rented apartment he shares with his partner in Melbourne.  For this reason, Luke has decided to lease out his property sporadically for short stay holiday accommodation!  It is SUCH a special space, in such beautiful surrounds (and of course styled to perfection by Luke) – I highly recommend a stay here!  You can view all holiday rental info over here!

ON THAT NOTE, Luke has an insanely exciting giveaway for you guys!  To launch his stunning contemporary farmhouse as a weekend getaway destination, Luke has generously offered a 2-night stay (either mid week or weekend) at his property, for up to 4 people, valid for the next 12 months.  OMG !!!!  To enter, simply leave your a comment on this post before 10.00pm Melbourne time tonight (Wed Sept 7th).  A winner will be drawn at random and contacted by email tomorrow!

*Update – Huge thanks to everyone for all your incredible comments!  Luke was very chuffed.  A winner has now been drawn at random – the lucky number was #42 – congratulations Rob!  Thanks so much everyone who entered!

Massive thanks to Luke for sharing his home with us (in more ways than one!), and for his incredible hospitality, which included the most delectable homemade lunch when we visited!  Also special thanks to Natalie Turnbull for assisting me on this shoot.

Daylesford Home – Comma

Comma in Daylesford – photographs by Dianna Snape

Love that hand-drawn map on the blackboard wall in the kitchen! Such a sweet and friendly detail…

This stunning Daylesford property has been designed and styled with such warmth, care and attention to detail, you could be forgiven for thinking you’re looking at the perfect family home. But this is no ordinary family home, this is Comma – a truly exquisite four-bedroom rental property in the heart of Daylesford, and the personal project of Melbourne-based Jane and Matt Martino.

Comma is such an incredible achievement for the Martino family! After years of holidaying in Daylesford, Melbourne-based Jane and Matt decided to buy land in the area just over three years ago. With their combined skills (Matt is an artist and freelance designer, whilst Jane is Executive Director of communications agency Undertow Media), the pair took on the challenge of designing, building and marketing Comma as a boutique holiday spot. Fast forward to 2010, and they’re the proud owners of this beautiful property – designed by Matt and built from the ground up! ALL THIS with three boys, ages 2,3 and 4….!! WHAT!?? Incredible.

Matt and Jane have launched the Comma Group with their gorgeous Daylesford property… but it seems they’re not keen on slowing down anytime soon! They plan to open another property in Byron Bay in 2011, which will also be built from scratch. Jeepers creepers… These guys really love a challenge!

Huge thanks to Jane for introducing me to this beautiful home, and for sharing all these stunning pics! Please visit the Comma website for more info about this very special rental property! Bookings are handled by Daylesford Getaways.

Daylesford Home – Jessie Fairweather

The Daylesford home of graphic designer Jessie Fairweather – The kitchen is designed around some reclaimed science benches from Melbourne Uni, and Ikea! The floors are black cement. All Photos by Roma Samuel, originally published in Green Magazine.

YES… it’s another Daylesford dream house! What can I say…. there is definitely some design magic in the air up there! (Hmmm I think I feel a regional design guide coming on…!).

This is the incredible new home of super talented Melbourne designer Jessie Fairweather. How GREAT is it? I am so totally jealous. You might remember Jessie’s business – The Foundry, and her brilliant papergoods range, Measure, which I blogged a long time ago? Jessie has had an insanely busy couple of years launching her business, building her new home, and then moving both her home and her business to Daylesford, about an hour and half from central Melbourne. And you know what else, Jessie did all this on her own!? Amazingness. I am totally inspired!

Jessie bought her little block of land in Daylesford a few years ago whilst still living and working in Melbourne. After a few years of thinking and planning how she might build an affordable, sustainable home on her little block, Jessie engaged local builder Mat Boyle of Pumphouse Design to realise her vision. Mat’s previous residential work appealed to Jessie, as did his focus on sustainable building methods, and his use of mainly reclaimed materials. The home was designed based on a studio shed Mat had previously built in Castlemaine – essentially a 10 x 10 metre corrugated iron studio with high ceilings, exposed reclaimed trusses, and cement floor. She added a studio on the side, and kept most of the living/kitchen space open. The house has just 1 bedroom, bathroom, and separate toilet and laundry.

Jessie moved her life and her business to Daylesford a couple of days before Christmas in 2008. During the process of designing and building her beautiful, sustainable home, Jessie completely fell in love with the area, and she says can no longer imagine living anywhere else! (Neither would I!). It was such a huge, brave move for a single lady with a fledgling design business… and personally I am just so in awe of Jessie’s incredible drive to make it work!

Jessie says her neighbours in Daylesford have been so incredibly welcoming… she loves the community spirit – and the rosellas, cockatoos and kangaroos who visit her backyard daily! Oh, and ps – since making her big move, Jessie has met her lovely man, who just happens to work in Breakfast & Beer – Jessie’s favourite café in Daylesford! Now that’s a success story. NICE work!

Jessie reclines in her gorgeous living room…. agghh too beautiful! Love all the Danish and vintage/industrial furniture… that beautiful vintage timber piece under the window is a winner!

Double doors made from recycled floorboards close off the living area.

A little paper model of the house, made by Jessie for a group exhibition titled “your world in 15x15cm”.

PS) All these fab photos of Jessie’s home have been kindly shared by Green Magazine - a beautiful local publication which highlights the best in sustainable architecture and design both locally and internationally. Green Magazine was founded 3 years ago by husband and wife team, photographer/editor Tamsin O’Neill and publisher Tom Bodycomb. There are more pics of Jessie’s gorgeous home, and many more wonderful examples of local sustainable living in this month’s issue – out now! Do support this brilliant local mag – it’s available at Borders and most newsagents. Thanks again Tamsin!

I’m sure most Melbourne readers would know Melbourne’s vintage queen Lyn Gardener! Lyn’s wonderful shop Empire Vintage in Albert Park has long been a local favourite for everything rare, pretty and vintage – and she also has three AMAZING homes which you might have seen before in print or online (including a feature on Design*Sponge last year!). They’re truly incredible spaces, decorated to perfection by Lyn herself, and often used as locations by photographers, film makers and events companies. Each home has a very different personality from the next – There are 2 industrial-style spaces in Fitzroy… and her more recent project – The White House in Daylesford. How beauuuutiful!?? Lyn truly has the magic vintage/industrial touch!

The White House is not actually Lyn’s own home – but the good news is, it’s a guesthouse you can go and stay at! For more details please check out The White House website!

And stay tuned for shots of Lyn’s own super-girly-gorgeous home in Fitzroy this afternoon!
